But up here, Mother Nature provides cold air for free.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GLACIER, the largest engine icing testing facility in the world, opened in 2010. Any time a plane flies through a cloud, there&#8217;s a chance ice will form somewhere and cause damage. It&#8217;s not just a winter issue.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Canada is the global research leader in this area. Roughly 80 percent of the world&#8217;s icing test facilities are located here.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Canada \u2014 and Carleton \u2014 are also leaders in the development of gas turbine engines. Longtime Carleton Aerospace Prof. Herb Saravanamuttoo, MacLeod&#8217;s thesis advisor, literally wrote the book on the subject. I just happen to be the guy who&#8217;s the common denominator. I&#8217;m just part of the choir.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award is named after Hungarian-American mathematician and aerospace engineer, Theodore von K\u00e1rm\u00e1n, whose work MacLeod has studied \u2014 and he&#8217;s awed by the recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He was a god, up there with Einstein and Max Planck. And I know some of the other people who have won the medal in the past; they wrote some of the textbooks I used at university. I look at those names and think there must have been some mistake.
