One of the most diverse groups of insects, with more than 19,000 described species, they inspire international organizations such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/naba.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North American Butterfly Association<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xerces.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xerces Society<\/a>, as well as countless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butterfliesandmoths.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">websites<\/a> devoted to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.butterfliesofamerica.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">identification<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-butterfly.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">monitoring<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/butterfly-conservation.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">natural history<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fascination is so widespread that it shapes the science we do. In our research, we&#8217;ve shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/fee.2783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">people are far more likely to photograph and report some butterfly species than others<\/a>, simply because they&#8217;re more colourful and look more interesting. That collective enthusiasm has transformed butterflies into one of the best-studied insect groups on Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, new research suggests butterflies are more than just pretty faces \u2014 they may <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-026-73635-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hold clues to healthy aging<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our own research focuses on how organisms adapt to their environments and what these changes reveal about broader ecological processes. Jayme Lewthwaite has studied Canadian butterflies for over a decade, studying traits associated with their changing ranges. Arne Mooers is a comparative biologist, probing adaptation by considering differences between related species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we consider why exceptionally long-lived butterflies evolved in the first place, and what their biology might (and might not) tell us about aging generally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"a-butterfly-that-eats-pollen\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">A butterfly that eats pollen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An international team of researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-026-73635-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently took a close look at one group of butterflies<\/a> \u2014 the <em>Heliconius<\/em> genus \u2014 that have evolved lifespans many times longer than other butterflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of this longer lifespan seems to be due to a unique adaptation: whereas most adult butterflies rely entirely on sugary nectar to fuel them, <em>Heliconius<\/em> butterflies have evolved to also eat pollen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This protein-rich food source is linked to slower physical decline, with older butterflies in this group maintaining muscle function far longer than their non-pollen feeding relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers suggest this observation may help us understand aging in other species, including humans, by identifying mechanisms that extend health span \u2014 the period of life spent in good health \u2014 rather than simply lifespan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"from-sensors-to-bullet-trains\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">From sensors to bullet trains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/750659\/original\/file-20260728-57-m08ocw.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.1&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/750659\/original\/file-20260728-57-m08ocw.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.1&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=754&amp;fit=clip\" alt=\"A butterfly with blue wings perches on a leafy branch\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A blue morpho butterfly. <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Morpho_peleides#\/media\/File:87-1276689971v1i2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(Wikimedia Commons\/Vera Kratochvil)<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CC BY<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Butterflies have inspired helpful breakthroughs before. For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforest-alliance.org\/species\/blue-morpho-butterfly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the blue morpho<\/a> is a striking tropical species with blue wings that shimmer in the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The arrangement of the microscopic layers behind this iridescent \u201cstructural colour\u201d has inspired a broad <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/ncomms8959\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">range of sensors<\/a> and even <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1021\/acsami.8b14146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anti-counterfeit films<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And of course, butterflies are not alone: the natural world is constantly inspiring scientific advances in other fields. The streamlined shape of kingfisher beaks helped engineers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/av\/science-environment-47673287\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">redesign Japan&#8217;s bullet trains to make them quieter<\/a> and more energy-efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But back to these healthy <em>Heliconius<\/em>. To appreciate the new observations, we have to first ask: why do we age at all?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"safe-lives-are-longer-lives\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Safe lives are longer lives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Technically, aging is a decrease in performance as time goes by, generally leading to an increase in the probability of dying. As anyone who finally gave up on their old rust-bucket jalopy knows, things eventually wear out beyond the point of repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But when do you stop investing? Species that are likely to die from external forces no matter how much they invest in their health have evolved to invest less in maintaining performance, because, truly, what&#8217;s the point? The rule for such species is \u201clive fast,\u201d and they age quickly. In contrast, species who live in relatively safe environments have evolved to keep on investing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, for instance, because trees are relatively safe places, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.0911439107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arboreal mammals live longer<\/a> than similar-sized species that spend their life on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opossum populations living on predator-free islands <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/j.1469-7998.1993.tb02665.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have evolved to age more slowly<\/a> than populations of the same species living on the mainland. If you are expected to live to see another spring and produce another litter, evolution will favour genes that actively slow aging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insects live very perilous lives. <a href=\"https:\/\/birdseedguide.com\/who-eats-bird-seed\/how-many-insects-does-a-bird-eat-a-day?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Birds like swallows and hummingbirds can eat thousands of them per day<\/a> so few live more than a month or two in nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exceptions prove the rule: cicadas live 13 to 17 years but <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1146\/annurev.en.40.010195.001413\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spend most of their lives safe underground<\/a>; queen termites <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.371.6536.1302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are the longest-lived insects we know<\/a>, laying eggs for decades, nestled deep in their mounds, far from predators and disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"distasteful-to-birds\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Distasteful to birds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some <em>Heliconius<\/em> species can live over 10 months in an insectarium. Importantly, even when deprived of pollen, they seem to age more slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, it isn&#8217;t just their diet that prolongs their life. They have evolved. These species are <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/een.12335\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">distasteful to birds<\/a> and have bright and distinctive colouring. Birds learn quickly to avoid them. So, it could be that <em>Heliconius<\/em> lead less-perilous lives than your average butterfly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, several of the shorter-lived cousins the authors compared <em>Heliconius<\/em> to, though they mimic distasteful species, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientists-4-species.org\/Benson_AmNat_1971.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">may be more palatable<\/a>. Perhaps they are more likely to be eaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this in mind, as the authors themselves suggest, it would be interesting to gather data on predation rates in the wild. If the chance of being eaten is lower in slow-aging <em>Heliconius<\/em> species than in, for example, quick-aging <em>Dione<\/em> species, it stands to reason that evolution favoured longevity, as it did for the opossums. Diet might matter, but only indirectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another interesting data point would be the external mortality rates of a shorter-lived, protein-feeding <em>Heliconius<\/em>, such as the <em>H. eleuchia<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"protein-for-longevity\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Protein for longevity?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/750666\/original\/file-20260728-85-oxlk3m.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.1&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/750666\/original\/file-20260728-85-oxlk3m.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.1&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=754&amp;fit=clip\" alt=\"A black butterfly with red markings on the wings against a background of green.\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Heliconius or passion-vine butterflies are tropical butterflies with a wide diversity of wing patterns. (Wikimedia Commons\/Richard Bartz), <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CC BY-SA<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Eating protein is <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.jhu.edu\/2026\/americas-protein-obsession-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">having its moment<\/a>, though eating more does not usually <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.ebiom.2019.04.005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contribute to longevity<\/a> in humans. Then again, we don&#8217;t eat pollen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, the long-lived <em>Heliconius<\/em> is different from humans in a potentially more important way: the protein the butterflies eat is used primarily for making eggs, something <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/pdf\/1744989.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">they continue to do right until the end of their lives<\/a>. We, of course, have not evolved to live like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, while these <em>Heliconius<\/em> live longer lives than their cousins, it remains to be seen if they are set to become trend-setting nutrition gurus.
