forming near the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bogs, fens and certain types of swamps are considered peatlands, which cover about four per cent of the planet&#8217;s surface yet contain twice as much carbon as is locked up in forest biomass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twelve per cent of Canada&#8217;s land area is peatland, roughly one-quarter of the global total, making this country a key place for studying \u2014 and protecting \u2014 these important carbon sinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this summer, to map Yukon peatlands, Millard and recent Carleton master&#8217;s graduate <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/geography\/people\/leila-rashid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leila Rashid<\/a>, who is now her lab&#8217;s research and operations manager, drove to field sites within a few hours of Mayo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The terrain there is mountainous, mostly boreal forest, with different types of wetlands, ranging from a few hundred square metres to tens of square kilometres in size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2026\/08\/peatland-fires-1200x800-3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Researcher conducting peatland fieldwork in the Yukon.\" class=\"wp-image-102351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2026\/08\/peatland-fires-1200x800-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2026\/08\/peatland-fires-1200x800-3-512x341.jpg 512w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2026\/08\/peatland-fires-1200x800-3-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2026\/08\/peatland-fires-1200x800-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2026\/08\/peatland-fires-1200x800-3-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2026\/08\/peatland-fires-1200x800-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/2026\/08\/peatland-fires-1200x800-3.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Carleton University master&#8217;s graduate Leila Rashid<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Millard and Rashid inserted steel permafrost rods into the wetlands they found, measuring depth and looking for <em>Sphagnum<\/em> or other mosses, which accumulates and becomes peat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also flew drones with different sensors: a LiDAR drone, which can produce a point cloud image of a peatland detailing elevation and vegetation; and a drone with a multispectral camera, which creates high-resolution images of a small area, revealing differences in wetness and vegetation health. Next year, they will add a thermal and short-wave infrared camera to record parts of the electromagnetic spectrum we can&#8217;t see with our eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Millard is using these sensors to develop new models that will allow researchers to detect peatland fires from satellite imagery. Her master&#8217;s research focused on east coast salt marshes, but when she arrived at Carleton as a PhD student, her supervisor, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/geography\/people\/richardson-murray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof. Murray Richardson<\/a>, suggested a shift to bogs.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I love standing in places \u2014\u00a0like the middle of a bog \u2014\u00a0where very few people ever venture,&#8221; says Millard. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You start noticing all these fascinating plants and species at risk. But peatlands in this part of the country have different characteristics than those in the west, where wildfires have been more intense this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When peatlands burn, we lose carbon that has taken a long time to accumulate,&#8221; says Millard.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Helping to stop peatlands from being destroyed is important, but they are changing so quickly and there are so many unknowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We need to understand when a peatland will act like a firebreak and when it will burn.
