She explains that the designer was an avid collector of East Asian decorative objects, among others, and the curator she is working with is interested in tracing the links between his private collecting and the silver designs produced under his directorship at Tiffany\u2019s. \u201cTelling the story of someone who didn\u2019t leave behind personal papers is all in the minute details and it is so fun to sort through them to reconstruct a narrative,\u201d says Gaudet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She continues: \u201cI have had the opportunity to hear and learn from so many different museum professionals including, the director of the museum, conservation specialists, curators, educators and digital media experts. I\u2019ve been able to develop a public gallery talk on a topic of my choosing, which has meant having the museum\u2019s remarkable collection as a playground of sorts!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gaudet and grad student Danielle Siemens both won <a href=\"https:\/\/alis.alberta.ca\/ec\/fo\/pay\/scholarships\/info.html?EK=45\">Sir James Lougheed Awards of Distinction<\/a>, worth $15,000, from the Alberta government. Only seven of these awards are given out at the master\u2019s level each year.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAfter an expensive summer in New York, this award will be indispensable in helping me to support myself while working on my thesis that looks at a collector named <a href=\"http:\/\/content.lib.sfu.ca\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/ceww\/id\/279\">Mary Weekes<\/a>,\u201d shares Gaudet.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Siemens will use some of her award money to conduct thesis research of photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.virtualmuseum.ca\/sgc-cms\/histoires_de_chez_nous-community_memories\/pm_v2.php?id=story_line&amp;lg=English&amp;fl=0&amp;ex=00000862&amp;sl=9983&amp;pos=1&amp;pf=1\">Rosemary Gilliat Eaton<\/a> and her work in the 1950s and 60s. \u201cI will primarily focus on Gilliat Eaton\u2019s work in the Arctic and how her photographs both conform to and complicate a myth of the \u2018North\u2019 and its peoples,\u201d says Siemens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This summer, Brittany Watson is working as an archival assistant at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whyte.org\/\">Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies<\/a> in Banff, Alberta.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>She says: \u201cI am gleaning valuable insights into working with archival collections, how an archives of the scale at the Whyte Museum functions within the institution as a whole, and how archival objects are shown or displayed, in particular, historical photographic collections.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Watson was awarded a highly competitive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museums.ca\/site\/projects_rbc\">RBC Foundation Museum Mentorship Award<\/a> from the Canadian Museums Association. The CMA, Canada\u2019s national museum association, awards only two of these awards per year. The award is allowing her to work at the Whyte Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watson is doing her thesis on a particular collection by photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whyte.org\/harmon\/bio.html\">Byron Harmon<\/a>, whose collection of photos is housed at the Whyte Museum. She is working on a variety of projects, including updating and organizing object files for their permanent collection and conducting research for future museum publications and exhibitions. Additionally, her internship includes scheduled presentations from every department at the museum, field trips to surrounding arts institutions, and tours of the PMA\u2019s diverse gallery spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-medium wp-image-1455\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/art-history-3-400x450.jpg\" alt=\"Rebecca Sullivan\" class=\"wp-image-1455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/art-history-3-400x450.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/art-history-3-300x338.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/art-history-3-768x864.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/art-history-3-700x788.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/art-history-3-200x225.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/art-history-3.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rebecca Sullivan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Sullivan participated in a class pilot that gave her and her classmates unprecedented access to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallery.ca\/en\/\">National Gallery of Canada<\/a> (NGC). \u201cThey learned how a great, world class art museum like the National Gallery works and they made their own contributions to it by curating exhibitions from the collection of the National Gallery archives,\u201d explains Payne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students participated in behind-the-scenes tours, a group-curated exhibition, an individual exhibition proposal that was presented to National Gallery of Canada curators, and they were allowed to attend National Gallery business meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This innovative class continues to be an exciting part of the MA program in Art History.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Gallery, Sullivan was able to be a part of the installation process of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homejames.ca\/geoffrey-farmers-leaves-of-grass\/\">Geoffrey Farmer\u2019s<\/a> epic sculptural work entitled Leaves of Grass, which was part of the Canadian Biennial. \u201cI am grateful that I was able to have this experience with a highly respected and successful Canadian artist,\u201d says Sullivan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am very excited to continue curatorial work in a different country and I have no doubt that my experiences at Carleton and the NGC helped make it happen,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Art History students also benefit from having an excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/cuag.carleton.ca\/\">art gallery on campus (CUAG)<\/a> that provides a vital cultural resource. A <a href=\"http:\/\/cuag.carleton.ca\/index.php\/students\/studentsuccess\/\">number of students have gained experience<\/a> by working there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MA student Hannah Keating is spending the summer evaluating the strengths of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spencervillemill.ca\/mill-foundation.html\">Spencer Mill Foundation\u2019s<\/a> collection and producing a detailed exhibition plan to revitalize and improve their current exhibit spaces that highlights the history of milling in Spencerville and improves the experience of visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>[wide-image url=&#8221;\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/art-history-4.jpg&#8221;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also this summer, Jasmine Inglis is working as a Research Assistant and Editor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbam.qc.ca\/en\/shop-online\/exhibition-tickets\/metamorphoses-in-rodin-s-studio\/1340\/\">Montreal Museum of Fine Arts<\/a> and is helping to organize an exhibition on contemporary Aboriginal art for the 2017 sesquicentennial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And graduate student Anna Paluch is writing articles on different activities that are happening at <a href=\"http:\/\/artbank.ca\/home\">Canada Council\u2019s Art Bank<\/a>, and topics that highlight artworks or themes found in their collection. \u201cIt is beyond rewarding working for the Art Bank,\u201d says Paluch. \u201cIt promotes my creative thinking skills, allowing me to find connections between so many diverse artists; it\u2019s a very stimulating environment.
