Carleton University and the Jarislowsky Foundation today announced a partnership to create a $4-million endowed research chair that will make significant contributions to the critical challenges of water and public health.<\/p>\n\n\n

The announcement coincides with World Water Day 2016, first celebrated by the United Nations in 1993 to co-ordinate the UN\u2019s work on water and sanitation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

With a $2-million investment from the Foundation, Carleton is establishing the new Jarislowsky Chair in Water and Global Health\u2014an academic position that will help provide safe drinking water and improved sanitation to communities across Canada and around the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith approximately 1.1 billion people worldwide lacking access to clean drinking water\u2014and 2.4 billion lacking access to sanitation\u2014we see a clear and urgent need for innovation and practical solutions,\u201d said Carleton President Roseann O\u2019Reilly Runte. \u201cWe\u2019re honoured to partner with Mr. Jarislowsky to lead research, train engineers and scientists, galvanize policy decisions and make a real difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

The Jarislowsky Chair in Water and Global Health builds on Carleton\u2019s existing academic and research leadership in water issues\u2014particularly in wastewater treatment. Faculty members lead promising applied water-related research from various disciplines, including engineering, public policy, environmental monitoring and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWater is one of the most critical health and environmental issues of our time, and as such it requires a multidisciplinary approach,\u201d said Foundation President Stephen Jarislowsky, CEO of one of Canada\u2019s largest and most successful investment management firms.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cThe Foundation recognized Carleton\u2019s expertise in this field, and we are pleased to partner with the university, its faculty and its students in tackling this critical challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

The Chair will be situated in the research-intensive Faculty of Engineering and Design (FED), specifically the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, but all activities will be interdisciplinary and pan-university. The faculty has launched an international recruitment effort to identify a scholar with interdisciplinary experience, collaborative approach and commitment to the protection of public health and the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Jarislowsky Chair will propose innovative solutions to address a universal need,\u201d said FED Dean Rafik Goubran. \u201cBy considering the engineering, environmental, public policy, and health implications of developing new processes and technology, this scholar will ensure that they are serving the global community in the best possible manner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jarislowsky Chair in Water and Global Health is part of the university\u2019s recently announced $300-million fundraising effort, Collaborate. Through this campaign\u2014the largest in Carleton history\u2014the university is engaging partners, philanthropists, students, faculty, staff and alumni to invest in key priorities that will realize change and progress in society. On the eve of our 75th anniversary, the campaign renews Carleton\u2019s founding mandate to be \u201cHere for Good\u201d \u2013 to advance education and knowledge as a force for the economic, social and common good of the community we serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Jarislowsky Foundation<\/strong>
