Through development and community investment, Richcraft has worked to make Ottawa a better place to live, work, and play.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNow they are making a further investment \u2014 their first gift to university education, and one that will make our city a better place in which to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The donation, Carruthers added, \u201cwill be used to make university more accessible for young people and support the cause of higher education in service of the public good of our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>[wide-image image=&#8221;4143&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"long-history-of-philanthropy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Long history of philanthropy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Singhal family has a long history of supporting health, recreation, arts and environmental projects. They have worked with Habitat for Humanity and the Ottawa Hospital, and the city\u2019s main east-end arena complex bears their company\u2019s name, among many other examples. This $3-million donation the single largest in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.richcraft.com\/company\/community-giving\/\" target=\"_blank\">extensive philanthropic history<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful to the Singhals for this generous gift and for their extensive role as community builders,\u201d said Carleton President Roseann O\u2019Reilly Runte. \u201cA gift to Carleton is ultimately a gift through Carleton towards a greater good, and this act of generosity furthers our ability to make our community a better place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton Business <a href=\"http:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/directory\/kumar-vinod\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prof. Vinod Kumar<\/a>, a family friend, said the Singhals wanted to get involved with Carleton not only because of their interest in education, but also because of the university\u2019s approach to fostering relationships with India, including the role played by the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canada-India Centre of Excellence<\/a>, which helps to build trade partnerships, as well as scientific and cultural links between India and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-4142\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/richcraft_hall_1200w_3.jpg\" alt=\"Manju and Kris Singhal\" class=\"wp-image-4142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/richcraft_hall_1200w_3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/richcraft_hall_1200w_3-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/richcraft_hall_1200w_3-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/richcraft_hall_1200w_3-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/richcraft_hall_1200w_3-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/richcraft_hall_1200w_3-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Manju and Kris Singhal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When Kris and Manju Singhal came to Canada from India in 1974, said Prof. Kumar, they arrived with \u201cfour suitcases and little money in an unknown land.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their journey over the past four decades has featured \u201cmany unexpected lows and unimaginable highs,\u201d he said. \u201cTheir hard work, instinct and faith made their destiny.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>After working at Nortel and with Supply and Services (Canada), Kris Singhal launched his first company in 1983.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Manju Singhal has remained \u201cthe soul of the Richcraft Group of Companies\u201d as the business grew and thrived, said Prof. Kumar. One of her roles is to identify philanthropic opportunities, and \u201cduring the last few years, their significant contributions have supported many significant aspects of civic life and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, they have turned their focus to university education, and we are better for it. They have the best of our city in mind at all times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>[wide-image image=&#8221;4145&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"investing-in-education\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Investing in Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The couple\u2019s daughters, Monica and Angela, now work with the company, tapping into their university experience in marketing and business respectively to help take the organization to the next level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRichcraft is one of Ottawa\u2019s most prominent real estate companies, and Carleton is a pillar of this city,\u201d said Monica Singhal. \u201cBuilding a great city is our passion, we could not be more excited to give people opportunity through education and this partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur parents raised us to appreciate the value of education,\u201d added Angela Singhal. \u201cIt enriches the mind and feeds the soul. Richcraft Hall is an iconic building on the Carleton campus, and it caught our parents\u2019 eyes because of the Gandhi statue outside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Singhal family\u2019s \u201ccommunity spirit\u201d has helped to make Ottawa a stronger and more vibrant community, noted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/Parliamentarians\/en\/members\/Chandra-Arya(88860)\" target=\"_blank\">Nepean MP Chandra Arya<\/a>. \u201cThey are a wonderful example of what can be done with a dream and dedication.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my career, I\u2019ve worked with many entrepreneurs and developers,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/mariannewilkinson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ottawa City Councillor Marianne Wilkinson<\/a>, who represents Ward 4 Kanata North. \u201cThose that succeed, like Richcraft, recognize that they have an obligation to serve.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>[wide-image image=&#8221;4141&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"community-service-is-in-carletons-roots\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Community service is<br> in Carleton\u2019s roots<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCreating meaningful neighbourhoods is about more than putting up homes. The Singhal family understands that principle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This donation comes at an important time for Carleton. Leading up to the university\u2019s 75th anniversary in 2017, Carleton is in the midst of <a href=\"https:\/\/futurefunder.carleton.ca\/project\/collaborate\/\" target=\"_blank\">Collaborate: The Carleton University Campaign<\/a>, the most ambitious fundraising effort in the school\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently at more than $200 million of its $300 million goal, the campaign seeks to raise further support for students, faculty and researchers so they can further contribute to the good of society, its economy and institutions, and the health and well-being of people globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the support of the Singhal family and other philanthropists, Carleton can fulfill its founding mandate to be \u201cHere for Good\u201d and bring positive change across the globe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, Carruthers noted in his speech, Carleton was established by community members \u2014 individual volunteers from the public service, local government and the business sector \u2014 who pooled their expertise and resources to enhance the availability of higher education in the city of Ottawa and the National Capital Region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were founded by an act of philanthropy \u2014 a gesture of community service and a noble gift toward the greater good of our society,\u201d he said. \u201cAs we approach our 75th anniversary in 2017, this commitment remains paramount. Through higher education, Carleton strives to make our world a better place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were so pleased to hear the news of this gift, given the company and Singhal family\u2019s sterling presence in Ottawa and its history of giving back.
