His experience on campus and in a new city inspired him to get serious about making music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wes Williams, who studied law and political science at Carleton in the mid-1980s, went on to release <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Pzull7scV2Y\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cLet Your Backbone Slide,\u201d<\/a> the first Canadian hip hop single to become a Top 40 hit and one of the best-selling singles in Canadian hip hop history. Then I transcended. I went back home to Scarborough, worked hard, and a year and a half later I got my record deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet Your Backbone Slide\u201d was the first single on Maestro\u2019s 1989 debut album \u201cSymphony in Effect,\u201d which won a Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Maestro Fresh Wes - The Distance feat. Saukrates (Official Lyric Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U5ng9sRS5v4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And though Williams has released six other studio albums, and tracks such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pPGmnODeKOA\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cReach for the Sky\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U5ng9sRS5v4\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Distance,\u201d<\/a> which amped up the soundtracks that supported Canada\u2019s athletes at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiphopcanada.com\/2014\/02\/maestros-reach-for-the-sky-named-anthem-for-2014-winter-olympics-news\/\" target=\"_blank\">2014 Winter Olympics<\/a> and 2016 Summer Olympics respectively, he has also branched out into acting and writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Williams has appeared in 10 films and televisions series, including his role on the CBC hit sitcom <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/mrd\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cMr. D\u201d<\/a> as teacher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/mrd\/characters\/paul-dwyer\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Dwyer<\/a> \u2014&nbsp;the teacher that all the students love.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>[wide-image image=&#8221;4685&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"maestro-fresh-wes-stuck-to-his-vision\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maestro Fresh Wes Stuck to his Vision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>His first book, <em>\u201c<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Stick-Your-Vision-Hurdles-Haters\/dp\/0771088833\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Stick to Your Vision: How to Get Past the Hurdles and Haters to Get Where You Want to Be,<\/em><\/a>\u201d was published by McClelland &amp; Stewart in 2010. Chuck D of American hip hop heavyweights Public Enemy wrote the foreword, and Toronto-based international rap superstar Drake provided a blurb: \u201c[Maestro Fresh Wes] let me know that it was possible to make a city so far removed feel like it was a part of it all. Now every song and move I make I think about my people back home and how proud I am of them and they are of me. I owe a part of my confidence as a rapper to Maestro.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That admiration is not unique. &#8220;Like most Canadian kids, he was the first Canadian rapper I saw on TV and heard on the radio,\u201d says Nova Scotia-based Juno-winning rapper Classified, who is featured on \u201cReach for the Sky.\u201d \u201cWhen I found out he was a fan of mine, it was a huge honour. Working with him over the years, he is still an inspiration \u2026 to see his excitement working in a studio and loving what he does. This sentiment echoes the community spirit of Carleton\u2019s founders, who established the university in 1942 with a commitment to giving back through education while pursuing contributions to the common good \u2014&nbsp;an idea at the heart of the 75<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"timing-is-everything\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Timing is Everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are some things bigger than you,\u201d says Williams. \u201cI\u2019m not bigger than hip hop. I just happened to be the guy who came along with a dope record at the right time to spark something. About 2,000 people showed up to watch him open for Public Enemy at Astralite, a now-defunct club on St. Laurent Boulevard \u2014&nbsp;a huge crowd for a hip hop show in this city at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/cu75\/events\/#1\" target=\"_blank\">75<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary event<\/a> at Carleton, which is open to all and will feature special displays, interactive activities, games and prizes, Williams will make a few remarks before he performs. He\u2019ll talk about the trials and tribulations he has gone through, and about the value of transferable skills.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAs an MC, I learned the importance of preparation and repetition,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI made that transition to film and TV and made it work. You have to be ready when you go on set or to an audition \u2014&nbsp;you practice over and over, and then try to make your delivery as organic as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople usually don\u2019t see the hard work you put into something, and neither do they care. Anybody can make a record, but making history is when you say something or do something and people remember you decades later. That\u2019s why people like Leonard Cohen and Bob Marley are so respected. They didn\u2019t just make music. That\u2019s why I try to come up with ideas that are universally applicable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Williams is aware of his historical significance as a hip hop trailblazer, he doesn\u2019t like to dwell on the past. \u201cI don\u2019t rest on my laurels, but I know how I\u2019m perceived. That keeps me grounded. Humility is a skill that we all have to work on. If not, our egos will contaminate us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Maestro Fresh Wes - Underestimated (feat.
