touring Dominion-Chalmers United Church while deliberating whether the Crabtree Foundation should support Carleton University\u2019s purchase of the historic downtown Ottawa property, a small group of musicians was rehearsing in the sanctuary, so the visitors quietly walked along the back of the balcony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sounds emanating from the stage in the acoustically stunning space, and the light filtering through the stained glass windows, was overwhelmingly beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crabtree, MacGarvie and their children \u2014&nbsp;who together constitute the board of directors of the family foundation \u2014&nbsp;decided unanimously to give Carleton a generous gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-9655\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/celebrating-support-dominion-chalmers-1200w-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9655\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">From left to href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/2018\/06\/05\/crabtree-foundation-donates-2-million-to-carleton-universitys-new-performance-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$2-million donation<\/a>, which was celebrated at a reception at the church on June 5 and is the largest single gift in the foundation\u2019s history, will help the university transform Dominion-Chalmers into a new cultural and community hub in the heart of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThinking about how best to express my feelings about this project, two words came to mind: idea and good,\u201d Sandra Crabtree said, reflecting on Carleton\u2019s \u201cHere for Good\u201d ethos, the university\u2019s mission to contribute to the greater good of society.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Then she read aloud from a letter written by her grandfather, Harold Crabtree, who founded the foundation in 1951: \u201cOver the years, I hope that our foundation\u2019s revenue can grow and become a more powerful instrument for good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy family,\u201d said Sandra Crabtree, \u201cis very proud to be part of this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-47537 size-full id=\"students-excited-about-potential-for-dominion-chalmers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Students Excited about Potential for Dominion-Chalmers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The reception at <a href=\"http:\/\/dc-church.org\/main\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dominion-Chalmers<\/a>, the first of a number of events in the coming months to thank supporters of the purchase, was emceed by a Carleton <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">music<\/a> student and gifted performer and multi-instrumentalist, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Angelique Francis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis excited me personally as a musician and as a Carleton student,\u201d said Francis, \u201cand it\u2019s also exciting for the entire arts community in Ottawa. I look forward to what this space will become, not only physically, but also for the people who use it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The university\u2019s transformation of the historic church east of O\u2019Connor Street between Lisgar and Cooper \u2014&nbsp;recently approved by the United Church of Canada \u2014&nbsp;will provide a multi-purpose performance space for students and faculty. Carleton currently has no space on campus that seats more than 400, hindering its ability to host large performances or lectures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dominion-Chalmers United Church, which is about 37,000 square feet with a seating capacity of approximately 1,000 in the main space, will not only provide much-needed room for the university\u2019s growing music program and other departments, it will also continue to serve as a community, cultural and artistic space for the broader Ottawa area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-9658\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/celebrating-support-dominion-chalmers-1200w-7.jpg\" alt=\"Celebrating Support for Dominion-Chalmers Cultural Hub\" class=\"wp-image-9658\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Angelique Francis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The facility currently hosts more than 70 concerts and music festivals each year, and Carleton hopes to increase the number of concerts and community events. In addition, Dominion-Chalmers will continue to host services for the church congregation and provide a home for their ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor several years now we have been facing a future where we would not be able to keep up this historic building,\u201d Church Council Chair David&nbsp;Hayman said in a recent statement. \u201cThis is a sale that is good for the future of the congregation. It is also good for Carleton University and for the people of Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur congregation has a long history of supporting both education and music in this city. We were among the early supporters of the Presbyterian Ladies\u2019 College, which later became the Ottawa Ladies\u2019 College, which was a predecessor of Carleton University. This is another example of the role Carleton continues to play in our civic life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Carleton Interim President Alastair Summerlee expressed his appreciation for the Crabtree Foundation\u2019s support and thanked his predecessor, Roseann O\u2019Reilly Runte, who had initially reached out to the foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Summerlee first visited the Carleton campus after accepting the interim presidency, Runte invited him into her office, looked him in the eye, and without providing much context, asked him to promise that he would buy a church.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThen, when I actually came to this facility, I instantly understood what she was talking about,\u201d said Summerlee, citing not only the main concert hall as a \u201csuperb performance space\u201d but also the planned state-of-the-art recording studio that will be created in the basement and a beautiful side garden.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Summerlee read from a letter that Runte wrote to the Crabtree Foundation \u2014&nbsp;\u201cthank you for your contribution, your patience, and for believing in this project\u201d \u2014&nbsp;and quoted Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran: \u201cMusic is the language of the spirit.
