I couldn&#8217;t be more proud,&#8221; said McKenna, who was making the announcement on behalf of Natural Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohiminister. &#8220;We can ensure a more sustainable future for our children and grandchildren.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research is led by three <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/\" target=\"_blank\">Carleton Engineering<\/a> professors, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cee\/people\/liam-obrien\/\" target=\"_blank\">Liam O&#8217;Brien<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cee\/people\/gunay-h-burak\/\" target=\"_blank\">Burak Gunay<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mae\/people\/ian-beausoleil-morrison\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ian Beausoleil-Morrison<\/a>, along with three post-doctoral fellows, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hbilab\/people\/sara-gilani\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sara Gilani<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hbilab\/people\/mohamed-ouf\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mohamed Ouf<\/a>, and Aly Abdelalim, and PhD student <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hbilab\/people\/tareq-abuimara\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tareq Abuimara.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/frozen-canoes\/\">Frozen Canoes<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/recharging-northern-energy-and-fish-resources\/\">Recharging Northern Energy and Fish Resources<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/mastering-methane\/\">Reducing Methane Emissions<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has immense potential to benefit Canada&#8217;s environment and economy: buildings and homes are responsible for about 17 per cent of Canada&#8217;s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/natural-resources-canada\/news\/2018\/01\/government_of_canadainvestsinhealthierenergy-efficienthomesandbu.html\" target=\"_blank\">Government of Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Considering the large environmental and economic impact of the building sector in Canada, it is imperative that we develop economically feasible, energy-efficient and sustainable design solutions for our commercial, institutional and residential buildings,&#8221; said Gunay.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Climate change &#8220;is one of the greatest challenges of our time,&#8221; Gunay said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Other partners include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwdi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rowan Williams Davies &amp; Irwin Inc. (RWDI)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.ca\/en?referrer=%252F\" target=\"_blank\">Autodesk<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca\/eng\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Research Council (NRC).<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the funding announcement, McKenna toured <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sbes\/research-facilities\/urbandale-centre-for-home-energy-research\/\" target=\"_blank\">Carleton&#8217;s Urbandale Centre for Home Energy Research<\/a>, a two-storey red building and a fully functional experimental facility where students and faculty study novel ways to reduce the reliance of Canadian housing on conventional energy sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the facility, faculty and students showed McKenna the innovative ways they are examining to construct better, more environmentally friendly homes.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Our faculty and students are conducting this research across our various facilities and disciplines . . . &nbsp;to solve real-world problems and help pave the way for a low-carbon future,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/about\/vice-president-research-international\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rafik Goubran, vice-president (Research and International<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Carleton faculty and students are heavily engaged in climate change and environmental research, whether they\u2019re measuring the levels of methane emission in central Canada, learning how to build roads, railways and structures on permafrost, or studying and building tiny homes to help reduce environmental footprints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton&#8217;s recently updated <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fmp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sustainability-Energy-Master-Plan-2018-21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">master energy plan<\/a> will help the campus continue to become more energy efficient and environmentally conscious.
