Along with summer camps, Virtual Ventures has been running fall and winter clubs, school outreach workshops and girls\u2019 outreach events (notably <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onwie.ca\/programs\/go-eng-girl\" target=\"_blank\">Go ENG Girl<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onwie.ca\/programs\/go-code-girl\" target=\"_blank\">Go CODE Girl<\/a>) for almost 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are striving to educate youth in a fun and engaging way by taking a different, out-of-classroom approach to learning science, technology, engineering and math (STEM),\u201d said Christine Riddell, director of Virtual Ventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McKenna visited the program on Aug. 15 to see first-hand how the Canada Summer Jobs fund is creating impactful work experiences for students and to learn more about how the Virtual Ventures program is helping to encourage young people to pursue careers in STEM fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We wanted her to see \u201cjust how much of an impact this funding can make on an organization like ours,\u201d Riddell said.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-48981 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center align=\"center\">\n<h2>New Pathways to STEM<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks partly to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/employment-social-development\/services\/funding\/canada-summer-jobs.html\" target=\"_blank\">fund<\/a>, which provides wage subsidies to employers to create employment for secondary and post-secondary students, Virtual Ventures was able to create 10 more positions on the team of about 25 university and high school students that help with the camps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fund \u201csupports great organizations: universities, not-for-profits and businesses, that otherwise wouldn\u2019t be able to hire students,\u201d McKenna said. \u201cWhen you have opportunities to explore during the summer outside the pressures of school, doing something fun, it can help you think of [your future], that you could go on to be an engineer, that you could get into the STEM field.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She toured two of the Virtual Ventures programs, catching up with a group of young campers decked out in costumes while creating a short superhero movie using a green screen and iMovie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second program McKenna visited was the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/vv\/summercamps\/connections-3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Connections Camp<\/a>, align=\"center\">\n<h2>Virtual Ventures: Connecting Indigenous Youth to STEM<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordyn Hendricks, a M\u00e9tis counsellor in the program and student at <a href=\"https:\/\/gloucesterhs.ocdsb.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gloucester High School<\/a>, said it\u2019s important that Indigenous youth are being connected with the STEM fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of the time, Indigenous people aren\u2019t recognized as being as strong and as resilient as we are, considering the amount of pain we\u2019ve faced and still face today. These Indigenous youths are fighting the stigma . . . It\u2019s so refreshing to see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtual Ventures also runs a two-week for-credit on-the-land Indigenous program on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.akwesasne.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Akwesasne reserve<\/a> in Cornwall, Ont., in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/actua.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Actua<\/a> (Canada\u2019s leading STEM youth outreach network) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snpolytechnic.com\/steam-academy\" target=\"_blank\">Six Nations Polytechic STEAM Academy<\/a> (a technology-rich secondary school based in Brantford, Ont.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connor Ruprecht, a third-year <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mae\/prospective-students\/undergraduate\/sustainable-and-renewable-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sustainable and Renewable Energy Engineering<\/a> student at Carleton, along with Meg Schwellnus, a third-year <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/id\/\" target=\"_blank\">Industrial Design<\/a> student, received funding to work at Virtual Ventures thanks to the Canada Summer Jobs program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I was in elementary school, math, science and technology were really detached from me,\u201d Ruprecht said. \u201cI think the earlier you\u2019re exposed to any STEM subject . . . &nbsp;the better. Everyone can bring their own perspective and their own piece to the science community. I think that\u2019s very important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really like that you get to reach so many kids, especially . . . &nbsp;those who may not be able to go to camp otherwise,\u201d Schwellnus added. \u201cThey explore technology that they might not get access to anywhere else . . . like Adobe programs, laser cutting, and 3D printing.
