Up in the North, Arnatslaq and Irngaut say, the way of life is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverybody knows everybody,\u201d Arnatslaq says. \u201cWe spend almost all our time outside playing, travelling and, in the summer, hunting walruses. We use every part of the walrus, for food, supplies, clothing and tools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They share the Inuit story of Qalupalik, passed down from generation to generation by Elders, \u201ca mythological creature which lives beneath the sea ice,\u201d Irngaut says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you jump from ice pan to ice pan, the creature knocks under the ice \u2026 you can hear it,\u201d Arnatslaq adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The northern lights, they add, are nearly too mesmerizing to describe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey dance,\u201d Arnatslaq says.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-49032 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49032\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum2-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum2-1-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum2-1-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum2-1-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum2-1-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum2-1-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<div align=\"center\">\n<h2>Making Connections Through&nbsp;Imagine Architecture<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair first came in contact with the Imagine Architecture program when a group of graduate students and faculty members from the Azrieli School visited Igloolik in April 2018 as part of the Extreme Landscapes graduate design studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organized by architect Robert Boraks, who taught the studio, and the school\u2019s director&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/architecture\/profile\/jill-stoner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jill Stoner<\/a>, the four-day trip included observation of a seal hunt at the floe edge, instruction building an igloo and time spent at the local elementary and high schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was there that Stoner met Arnatslaq and Irngaut, who share an interest in drawing. She invited them to visit Ottawa to join the Imagine Architecture workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe town of Igloolik hosted us so generously during out time there, and it was exciting to be able to offer a reciprocal visit to these two young people,\u201d Stoner says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Igloolik, the group studied the culture, landscape and architecture of the North.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-49033 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49033\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum3-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum3-1-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum3-1-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum3-1-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum3-1-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/IqaQum3-1-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<div align=\"center\">\n<h2>Breaking Through Preconceived Notions of the Arctic<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a preconceived notion of what the Arctic is in our minds,\u201d Architecture Prof. Johan Voordouw, who led this year\u2019s edition of the Imagine Architecture program, says about the Carleton students\u2019 trip to Igloolik. \u201cTo actually be there and see the light hit the water and ice and to meet the people who make their lives up there is just incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On campus, Arnatslaq and Irngaut, along with 40 other high school students from coast to coast, participated in workshops on the fundamentals of architecture, from drawing and planning a design to exhibiting and presenting a final project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to bring this knowledge back to our community,\u201d Irngaut says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While in Ottawa, Arnatslaq and Irngaut stayed with host families in Old Ottawa South. They toured Ottawa landmarks and enjoyed a weekend camping trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the near future, Arnatslaq hopes to pursue a career in planetary science.
