Photo by Christophe Delaville.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was always a dream to play pro, but it actually came true in 2003 when the Vancouver Canucks drafted him. They offered him a contract in 2005 when he was 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen that offer from Vancouver came, I knew it was something I had to try,\u201d he says, deciding at the time to put post-secondary education on hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He never played for the Canucks, but played professionally for their franchises &#8211; Columbia, South Carolina&#8217;s Inferno and Victoria, B.C.&#8217;s Salmon Kings. All courses were done by distance. It takes an incredible amount of self-discipline to manage this feat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gu\u00e9nette says there are skills and values he learned as a hockey player that he transfers to accounting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHockey, and sports in general, is a good school of life,\u201d he says. \u201cYou don\u2019t just learn about hockey techniques, you also learn about work ethic, teamwork, and communication.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2011 to 2017, Gu\u00e9nette completed his correspondence degree, but didn\u2019t see a reason to stop skating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLife as a pro hockey player \u2014 you have a lot of spare time,\u201d he says. \u201cYou can be playing cards, watching a movie or you pick up a textbook.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a Commerce degree in hand, he went over his options to become an accountant. He returned to Carleton in May for a summer term and completed the three-day Common Final Examination to become a CPA. This fall, he started a full-time job at BDO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an exciting time,\u201d he says. \u201cBut at the end of the day, I\u2019m starting a second career. It\u2019s just about putting in the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Fall Convocation is taking place on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018.
