Although he was awarded both the Governor General\u2019s Medal<\/a> and the University Medal for Outstanding Graduate Work at the Doctoral Level<\/a>, Robert Lennox doesn\u2019t feel he deserves all the credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI certainly attribute most of the successes I\u2019ve had in the past to the people I\u2019ve worked with,\u201d he says. \u201cThere are a lot of really great researchers who took a lot of time to give me direction, comments and advice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Passion for the Subject<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

He admits that he dedicated himself and worked very hard to obtain his PhD in Biology<\/a>. But what gave him an edge was his passion for the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am totally fascinated by Atlantic salmon and migration biology,\u201d he says. \u201cWhether I excelled at it or not, I just always enjoyed it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lennox, who grew up in Ottawa\u2019s Hintonburg neighbourhood, received a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from Dalhousie University in 2012. He joined the Cooke Lab<\/a> of Carleton Prof. Steven Cooke as a master\u2019s student but fast-tracked to a PhD in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI recognize that I\u2019ve had a lot of opportunities and I\u2019m really lucky because I enjoy what I do so much,\u201d says Lennox. \u201cIt never really felt like work or even school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best part of his PhD was the work he did abroad, he says. Contributing to conservation research in Norway, Guyana and French Polynesia, where he helped local efforts to maintain sustainable fisheries and protect ecosystems, was an enriching experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Human Impact on Fish Stocks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after successfully defending his thesis, Lennox became senior researcher at the Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (LFI)<\/a> of the Norwegian Research Center<\/a>. From the lab in Bergen, Lennox will continue to research human and environmental impacts on fish stocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really easy to get out of bed in the morning and be a researcher in this field. There are just so many important questions and I think they\u2019re all really timely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
