institutions assembled at La Cit\u00e9 coll\u00e9giale\u2019s new Excentricit\u00e9 studio on Nov. 9, 2018 for an unprecedented gathering: the Education City education and innovation workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Education City, a partnership between Carleton University, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.algonquincollege.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Algonquin College<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collegelacite.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Cit\u00e9<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uottawa.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Ottawa<\/a>, is a collaborative attempt to develop more integrated \u201cstackable\u201d academic programs and shared research shops that will help find solutions to challenges faced by businesses, non-profits and Summerlee<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizers expected 100 attendees but instead drew about 150 people, including representatives of l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Saint-Paul \u2014 a testament to the desire among educators to find ways to provide students with the flexibility they need to thrive in a world where traditional forms of employment are changing rapidly and dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNothing that will happen today will be traditional,\u201d La Cit\u00e9 President Lise Bourgeois said in opening remarks.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur primary task today is really simple \u2014 can we put on paper educational innovations that we can really implement?\u201d asked Alastair Summerlee, Carleton\u2019s former interim president and Education City\u2019s executive lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Summerlee noted that Ontario\u2019s Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities supported the pilot initiative with $800,000 over two years and, if it proves successful, the provincial government is open to providing base funding to keep it going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Education City\u2019s partners are already working together on the $5-million David C. Onley Initiative for Employment and Enterprise Development aimed at developing knowledge, resources and tools to help students with disabilities advance their careers. He asked a cross-section of students to identify phrases that define the expectations they have for their degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phrases such as \u201cliberalize society\u201d (create understanding and inquiring minds, appreciate culture and humanity, protect freedom of expression, value tolerance and diversity), \u201cbecome part of society\u2019s conscience\u201d (promote social justice, engage in public service, develop moral purpose, foster social mobility) and \u201cadvance ideas\u201d (do fundamental and applied research, nurture entrepreneurism, commercialize ideas and inventions) came to mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"more-interesting-reads\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Interesting Reads<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/accessible-workplaces\/\">Creating Accessible Workplaces<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/carleton-designers-win-idea-awards\/\">Carleton Designers Win IDeA Awards<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/fighting-for-disability-rights\/\">Fighting for Disability Rights<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nobody talked about training to prepare students to get jobs. As one student said to Summerlee: \u201cWe don\u2019t know what kind of jobs there will be in the future. How would you know?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents understand that their future will involve flexibility,\u201d said Summerlee.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cTheir future will involve being humans in a world that they\u2019ll be able to adapt to.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Colleges and universities are already effective at doing co-ops, internships, work placements, joint degree\/diploma programs, online learning and workplace learning, such as Carleton\u2019s unique Dev Degree computer science partnership with Shopify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut can we do better?\u201d asked Summerlee. \u201cI think we can do better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cImagine if we could harness the power of a college education and combine it with a university education and link that so much more clearly with workplace learning. The final frontier is very vague.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the afternoon breakout session, a suggestion arose for a guided, customized student pathway, potentially involving courses at any of the four participating institutions, with an adviser helping students decide which courses are the best fit for their needs and goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same group discussed the idea of interdisciplinary, multi-institution programs built around common cores of knowledge \u2014 the fundamental skills and experience that students need to work in a range of related fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These approaches could be facilitated by some sort of post-secondary \u201cpassport,\u201d or a pay-as-you-go system, which would allow students to chart their own paths.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-51751 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/education-city-1200w-3.jpg\" alt=\"Education City\" class=\"wp-image-51751\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/education-city-1200w-3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/education-city-1200w-3-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/education-city-1200w-3-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/education-city-1200w-3-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/education-city-1200w-3-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/education-city-1200w-3-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"architects-of-our-future\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Architects of our Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to La Cit\u00e9\u2019s Lise Bourgeois, Carleton President Benoit-Antoine Bacon, University of Ottawa President Jacques Fr\u00e9mont and Algonquin President Cheryl Jensen all spoke at the workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jensen noted that she\u2019s worked in the college system since the 1980s and has seen a lot of successful partnerships between Algonquin and both Carleton and the University of Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m challenging you today to think differently,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m challenging you to be the architects of our future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fr\u00e9mont reiterated an axiom that he\u2019s fond of sharing:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNo students, no teachers. No teachers, no research. So, never forget why students are here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Bacon, who delivered closing remarks, said \u201cwhen I arrived at Carleton five months ago and learned about the colleges and universities working together, I said, \u2018Wow!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday demonstrates this is a full partnership between the institutions. Universities and colleges need to work together.
