rel=\"noopener\">Kathy Dobson<\/a> was working toward a master\u2019s degree in Communication Studies at a university in southwestern Ontario, one of her professors said that only five people on the planet read his very specialized research papers.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf you changed a few words,\u201d she asked him, \u201cdo you think you might get 10 readers?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t laugh,\u201d reports Dobson, an instructor, journalist, author and PhD candidate at Carleton University whose research and non-academic writing revolve around media representations of poverty and her own first-hand experiences of living in poverty respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a writer,\u201d she says. \u201cI want to be read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"922\" href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/2018\/dobson-publishes-second-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second non-fiction book<\/a>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vehiculepress.com\/q.php?EAN=9781550655070\">Punching and Kicking: Leaving Canada\u2019s Toughest Neighbourhood<\/a><\/em>, was to launch at a Carleton event. \u201cIt\u2019s healthy to have your feet in the real world while doing academia.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMind you, if I wasn\u2019t doing all this other stuff, I\u2019d probably have my PhD finished by now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>By \u201cother stuff,\u201d she means transforming her first memoir \u2014&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vehiculepress.com\/q.php?EAN=9781550653236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">With a Closed Fist: Growing Up in Canada\u2019s Toughest Neighbourhood<\/a><\/em> \u2014&nbsp;into a script for a producer who plans to make it into a feature film. And writing a collection of short stories. And working on a third non-fiction book, about whistleblowers, for Montreal\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vehiculepress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">V\u00e9hicule Press<\/a>, which has published both of her previous releases. And teaching <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/communication\/undergraduate-studies\/special-topic-courses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media and Poverty<\/a>, a new fourth-year, special-topic Communications course at Carleton this semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The young Kathy Dobson who narrates <em>Punching and Kicking <\/em>could never have imagined herself standing in front of a room full of university students. But the book received tremendous feedback \u2014&nbsp;the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/arts\/books-and-media\/with-a-closed-fist-by-kathy-dobson\/article4247496\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Globe and Mail called it<\/a><\/em> a \u201cwicked, incisive, brutal memoir\u201d \u2014&nbsp;and readers kept asking when she was going to share more of her story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>With a Closed Fist<\/em> ends on an optimistic note, although far from \u201chappily ever after,\u201d and the same feeling flows through <em>Punching and Kicking<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"more-interesting-reads\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Interesting Reads<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/communication-and-media-studies-40-years\/\">Reinventing Communication and Media Studies<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/capital-current-takes-off\/\">Capital Current Takes Off<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/documenting-life-war-zones\/\">Documenting Life in War Zones<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s never a straight line out of poverty,\u201d says Dobson, who worked as a journalist at CBC and other media outlets for 20 years before going to graduate school, eventually landing at Carleton and securing the support of a prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/2015\/dobson-wins-prestigious-vanier-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vanier Scholarship<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf you grow up on welfare, that has a legacy that will follow you for your entire life in so many ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>Punching and Kicking<\/em> is not writing for catharsis, by any means. But she\u2019s concerned about digital surveillance and the collection of personal information, about a lack of transparency and accountability, and the impacts on vulnerable citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf you say, \u2018I have nothing to hide,\u2019 then you\u2019re probably white and middle class,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI may look middle class, but if you piss me off, Point St. Charles comes out.
