href=\"http:\/\/fairtrade.ca\/en-ca\/get-involved\/fair-trade-programs\/fair-trade-campus\" target=\"_blank\">Fair Trade Campus<\/a> designation awarded by <a href=\"http:\/\/fairtrade.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fairtrade Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a move towards supporting fair and ethical conditions for global producers, all non-franchised campus locations and the university\u2019s catering services are now selling fair trade coffee, tea and chocolate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university\u2019s designation comes after a rigorous application process which saw students and administration coming together over the past year to ensure product availability and fair trade awareness around campus, a requirement set by Fairtrade Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a huge milestone that should be celebrated,\u201d said M\u00e9lissa Dub\u00e9, the Outreach Manager for Fairtrade Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBy becoming a Fair Trade Campus, Carleton is making a statement in becoming a leader in social issues and social justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Currently, only 21 other post-secondary institutions across Canada have been designated with the title, with Carleton becoming the 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis designation is part of our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement in Dining Services and across campus,\u201d said Ed Kane, assistant vice-president id=\"desire-for-more-fairtrade-options-on-campus\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Desire for More Fair<br>\nTrade Options on Campus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that the decision to change Carleton\u2019s purchasing policy was spurred on by student feedback indicating a desire to have more fair trade options available on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the initial spark to include more fair trade dining options, <a href=\"http:\/\/dining.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dining Services<\/a> in conjunction with student-organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FairTradeCarletonUniversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fair Trade Carleton<\/a> and staff members, formed a 10-member committee that would oversee the application process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June 2016 the application was submitted to Fairtrade Canada for approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are excited to see this fantastic collaboration of students, Dining Services, CUSA and administration come to fruition as a response to our community\u2019s strong belief and demand for social responsibility and using food as a vehicle to make responsible purchasing decisions,\u201d said Jane Skapinker, Carleton\u2019s registered dietitian with Dining Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Student input played a major role in working towards the approval of the initiative by encouraging the move towards supporting social justice at Carleton, said Kenneth Boddy, the former president of Fair Trade Carleton and a master\u2019s student at the <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/npsia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Norman Paterson School of International Affairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents have been drivers in terms of pushing the initiative forward and educating other students,\u201d said Boddy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"fair-trade-supportinghuman-rights\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fair Trade: Supporting<br>\nHuman Rights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ivy McKee, a third-year student and current president of Fair Trade Carleton, echoed the importance of the student voice to the designation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents want to know that the products they\u2019re buying are not being exploitative,\u201d said McKee.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis designation means that Carleton as a university supports human rights around the world and fair sourcing practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Organizers see the university\u2019s newest title as only the first step in moving towards further social justice and sustainability practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also about asking: \u2018What next?\u2019\u201d said Dub\u00e9.&nbsp; \u201cWhat can the Carleton community do next in terms of sustainability and justice?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After receiving a fair trade designation, campuses are encouraged to consider adopting fair trade purchasing policies around other foods, a step that Carleton could take in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about culture change.
