I merely transitioned to ancestorhood in the worldview of my people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton University\u2019s Pius Adesanmi was not speaking of himself when he wrote those words in his book, <em>You\u2019re Not a Country, Africa<\/em>, but they nevertheless hung poignantly in the air at a festival of his life held March 26, 2019 at Carleton Dominion Chalmers Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They had been spoken by <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/kagiso-lesego-molope-novelist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kagiso Lesego Molope<\/a>, a graduate student and author who was among many who gathered to celebrate Pius Adesanmi, who died in the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 in Addis Ababa on March 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Festival of Life - Pius Adesanmi\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JBSiLRnt8HQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She thanked Adesanmi for the way he had made her \u2013 and other African students &#8212; feel celebrated through his role as director of Carleton\u2019s Institute of African Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/carleton-mourns-loss-of-professor-pius-adesanmi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adesanmi\u2019s passing<\/a>, the university lost a literary critic, satirist, public intellectual, who won a Penguin Prize for African Writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the university community lost so much more than that. That\u2019s the highest level of a significant life. Pius led a significant life, he had a vibrant personality and his unique gift in connecting us came through in his interactions. He was a unifier who had the capacity to look past boundaries. The ocean seemed like a small thing when he bridged the distance between Canadian and African societies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in Nigeria in 1972, Adesanmi completed his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Ilorin, and Master of Arts at the University of Ibadan, both in Nigeria. His towering presence, booming voice and wonderful sense of humor were felt all across campus. He made a difference in the lives of many.
