It does give students a different sense of contribution and motivates them in a different way than if I were describing the project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steckley says the physical space of the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/discoverycentre\/our-spaces\/learning-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\">Discovery Centre\u2019s Learning Lab<\/a> plays an important part in the non-traditional delivery of the course. With seating for 25, the room includes two large projection screens and four smaller screens adjacent to tables designed for group work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt can be difficult for students to transition from being a taker of knowledge to leading the project themselves, especially when we are on campus,\u201d she said. \u201cThey work directly for the organization, which meant that I needed a non-hierarchical space that wasn\u2019t going to put me at the front of the room. The large tables and the open space allows us to connect and collaborate better than anywhere else on campus, and the fact that our professor is not standing at the front of the room puts us in the driver\u2019s seat of our learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Built in 2013, the Discovery Centre is housed on the fourth floor of the MacOdrum Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a high-traffic space that is always busy with student activity and we are glad to open our doors to support&nbsp;innovative classes like Prof. Steckley\u2019s where there is an emphasis on immersive learning and group engagement,\u201d said Alan Steele, director of the Discovery Centre. \u201cIt\u2019s a perfect fit.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Third-year Carleton University Global and International Studies student Sidney Anthony has been looking forward to Tuesday mornings every week all semester.
