During her keynote speech on March 4, Yaprak Baltacio\u011flu, the 12<sup>th<\/sup> chancellor of Carleton, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/courage-and-giving-back\/\">called on the assembled students to give back<\/a> as they prepare to set out on their career paths.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWorking is not about just going to work and coming back and feeding your family,\u201d said Baltacio\u011flu, an alumna of Carleton\u2019s Master of Arts in Public Administration program.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe choices you make along your career path should be guided by making a positive difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former Secretary of Canada\u2019s Treasury Board Secretariat shared experiences from her 29-year-long public service career. Many of the graduate students in attendance plan to pursue careers in the public service, and for them she offered sage advice.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAs a senior public servant, I had to give tough advice to ministers and sometimes prime ministers,\u201d said Baltacio\u011flu.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t what they wanted to hear, and it was inconvenient for them to hear it. She spoke about the lives of Jethro Anderson, Curran Strang, Paul Panacheese, Robyn Harper, Reggie Bushie, Kyle Morrisseau and Jordan Wabasse \u2014 seven First Nations youths known primarily for their deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of her talk, Talaga shared what it means to tell stories from an Indigenous perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIs what we do so different? Yes and no,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBy me telling you the story of <em>Seven Fallen Feathers<\/em>, I\u2019m going to talk about how we tell stories, how we hope you see our stories, and how we hope you see that we\u2019re all people at the end of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Talaga recounted how an article for the <em>Toronto Star<\/em> on the topic of voting by Indigenous people led her to Thunder Bay, Ont. Once there, Stan Beardy, then grand chief of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nan.on.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nishnawbe Aski Nation<\/a>, asked Talaga if she knew about the disappearance of a boy named Jordan Wabasse, who had been missing for 70 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe said to me that Jordan was the seventh student to go missing or to die in Thunder Bay since 2000,\u201d Talaga said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI was ashamed, as an Anishinaabe woman, that I didn\u2019t know this story and that I wasn\u2019t writing about this story. I was ashamed as a journalist. Where were the satellite TV trucks? How come they weren\u2019t doing stories on these kids?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>During the event, Talaga took part in a conversation with APTN\u2018s Francine Compton during which they discussed the responsibilities of journalists and took questions from the audience. Addressing a question on what the average Canadian can do to help, the two journalists encouraged the audience to learn about and share Indigenous history, press government for change, and examine how the Truth and Reconciliation Commission\u2019s 94 Calls to Action can be applied to their own lives.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-55402 size-full w-screen id=\"north-american-trade-and-criminal-justice-reform-discussed\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">North American Trade and Criminal Justice Reform Discussed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The role of civil activism in North American free trade discussions took centre stage on Feb. 28 at the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/cu_event\/civil-society-north-american-free-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\">FPA Research Excellence Award Symposium \u2014 Trading on New Terms: Civil Society and North American Free Trade<\/a>.<\/em> Laura Macdonald, a professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/polisci\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Political Science<\/a>, hosted the symposium, bringing together scholars and civil society organizations to discuss connections between the new North American free trade agreement, civil society activities and Canada\u2019s progressive trade agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As FPA Research Month wound down, the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/events\/the-bell-lecture\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dick, Ruth, and Judy Bell Lecture<\/a> <em>with Senator Kim Pate on March 18 was entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/cu_event\/2019-bell-lecture-presented-by-senator-kim-pate\/\" target=\"_blank\">What Should Canadians Know \u2014 and What Can They Do \u2014 About Criminal and Justice Reforms During This Election Year?<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pate, who has dedicated her 35-year career to working on behalf of marginalized people impacted by Canada\u2019s legal and penal systems, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/senator-kim-pate-reform-justice-system\/\">called for reforms<\/a> to Canada\u2019s criminal justice system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her talk, she acknowledged that meaningful social justice reforms face ongoing challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe still have the stigma there are certain people who are okay to treat badly,\u201d Pate said, noting that this way of thinking needed to end.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>With another successful FPA Research Month concluded, audiences will surely look forward to the next iteration as the celebration continues to promote
