I propose to heal the land and ultimately hope to trigger a new sense of identity for the people of Thetford.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His project would cover a two-kilometre area and include housing, public institutions and park space while bridging two neighbourhoods separated by mine extraction sites.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s speculative,\u201d Dubois said, \u201cbut I went to Thetford last fall and met with people at city hall and they were very receptive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The 3MT, developed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uq.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Queensland<\/a> in Australia and now held at universities worldwide, has been an annual event at Carleton since 2013. The participants were offered information and training sessions by the FGPA and <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department of University Communications<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe listen to their presentations or ideas and give them feedback,&#8221; said Lafferty. &#8220;The most common advice is to keep it simple, focus on the most important things, have a structure to the presentation, start off broad, show how your own research fits into that context and then end with the impact it can have. Fejzic said she turned to writing fiction after becoming bored with her editing and writing work at a local museum four years ago. She quit her job, pursued her second degree at Carleton in <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/english\/graduate-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\">English Literature<\/a> (her first was a Commerce degree), and published her first book last year, <em>Psychomachia<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carleton 3MT 2017 2nd place winner\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jFbchhP6V74?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to see how fiction is a form of truth-telling,\u201d she said. \u201cPost-truth was Oxford Dictionary\u2019s Word of the Year last year, but the problem of truth is older than Plato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy research,\u201d she said, \u201cconsiders if fictional stories have the power to inspire empathy for those whose lives are not like our own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fejzic received a $500 prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third prize of $250 went to <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/neuroscience\/prospective-students\/graduate-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Neuroscience<\/a> doctoral student Derrick Matthew Buchanan, who presented his research on brain stimulation as a cost-effective treatment for mental health and neurological disorders in children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When I was younger, I wanted to be an archaeologist because I had the urge to discover something nobody else has found,&#8221;\u2019 he said. &#8220;With the study of the brain, I can make endless discoveries.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"3MT 2017 3rd Place Winner\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Yrr3wiYRQkg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Buchanan hopes his research will find solutions to speed recovery of children without resorting to medications.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a neuroscience approach to a clinical endeavour,\u201d Buchanan explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The 3MT event enabled him to hone his teaching and speaking skills, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI learned to deliver a message clearly and concisely and showcase my research, as well as gain some traction in the community and gauge feedback regarding the importance of my research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-5606 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/carleton_3mt_1200w_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/carleton_3mt_1200w_5.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/carleton_3mt_1200w_5-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/carleton_3mt_1200w_5-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/carleton_3mt_1200w_5-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/carleton_3mt_1200w_5-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/carleton_3mt_1200w_5-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Samuel Dubois first considered pursuing his master\u2019s in Architecture at Carleton University, he had his mind set on a project about municipal libraries in Quebec.
