The disruption of the status quo invariably creates conflict with the mainstream, especially when it has historically enjoyed privilege &#8212; whether or not its members realize that. Marginalized groups taking action often stands in contrast to the inertia of those who have no complaint with the way society is working.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Velshi is an economic journalist, and he notes that class is playing an increasingly important role in U.S. politics, particularly in areas that have not benefitted from the free trade ethos of recent decades. Here, the zero sum calculation comes into play, with immigrants forced to shoulder the blame for disappearing jobs \u2013 even with unemployment rates at all time lows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Combine that with regular attacks on institutions that play key roles in protecting freedoms \u2013 the FBI, judiciary and media &#8212; and you have a troubling mix.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\n\u201cWe have culture wars all over the world,\u201d Velshi says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut in this sense of competition, the&nbsp;weaponization of culture is something that is perhaps more serious: the conversion of identity politics into political action for a particular goal that is not achieved by the tradition of debate and compromise that has characterized much of recent Western democratic history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-56214 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Library_and_Archives_Canada-1200x680.jpg\" alt=\"Library and Archives Canada\" class=\"wp-image-56214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Library_and_Archives_Canada-1200x680.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Library_and_Archives_Canada-1200x680-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Library_and_Archives_Canada-1200x680-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Library_and_Archives_Canada-1200x680-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Library_and_Archives_Canada-1200x680-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Library_and_Archives_Canada-1200x680-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"canada-not-immune\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canada Not Immune<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada may not be as far down this road as its neighbour to the south, but Velshi cautions that we\u2019re not immune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe weaponization of culture works because it&#8217;s easier than the alternative. It&#8217;s easier than self-examination, than finding the real reasons for a lack of prosperity. It just takes less work. It takes less thought than meritocracy and less work than pluralism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lecture was organized to celebrate Gray\u2019s integrity during his long career and the commitment to facts that he brought to public life. Riddell Graduate Program in Political Management<\/a>, which trains students in the skills of applied politics. It was the first edition of what is hoped will become an annual affair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHigher education is a force for good.
