University \u2014 Queen Elizabeth Scholar Day\u201d in Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watson and City Manager Steve Kanellakos led the group on a tour, and held an information session and discussion about the \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From April until June, the QES-AS program is looking at climate change and societal transformation through cross-cultural academic exchanges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visiting scholars working with Carleton come from Tanzania, Malawi and Ghana to research the impacts of the climate crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-56809 size-full id=\"the-importance-of-a-multidisciplinary-approach\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Importance of a Multidisciplinary Approach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Onita Basu, Carleton\u2019s QES-AS principal investigator, says the most important aspect of the program is its multidisciplinary approach.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe pull in people from arts, sciences and engineering,\u201d Basu says. \u201cWhenever you get to meet people from different countries, different backgrounds, it always enhances the way that you can lens out and view the same topic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As part of the program, two Carleton students will be going to Africa in the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/qes\/people\/andy-kusi-appiah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy Kusi-Appiah<\/a> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/geography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geography and Environmental Studies<\/a> PhD candidate and adjunct professor at Carleton. He says the opportunity to collaborate with scholars from different backgrounds is the most rewarding aspect of the program. And for Gal, meeting the incoming scholars was a fulfilling aspect for her.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAlso, everything that they can teach us in a developed country about climate change and what really needs to happen and who\u2019s getting the result from it,\u201d she says. \u201cListening to their presentations on how each of them, in their unique way, is trying to battle [climate change] was inspiring\u201d Gal adds.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The QES-AS program was established in 2012 and continues to operate at more than 40 Canadian universities and almost 60 countries. By 2022, the program hopes to support 3,000 scholars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basu stresses the importance and uniqueness of the integrated program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s filled me with such a great respect for how complex [the climate crisis] really is.
