Onley Initiative<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23AbleTo&amp;src=typd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#AbleTo<\/a> public awareness campaign. It brought together organizations that promote accessible and inclusive workplaces.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe already have the potential to make workplaces accessible with the help of technology,\u201d says Boris Vukovic, director of the READ Initiative. \u201cMany mainstream systems and software have accessibility features built in, or enable accessibility through their core functionality.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Vukovic noted that technology is an effective way to make employment settings more accommodating and ease employer concerns, as well as tackle some myths about burdens of accessibility in workplaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough our employment initiatives at Carleton and relevant partnerships, we hope to make employers more aware of readily accessible supports and capacity \u2013 and to address the notion that adapting workplaces for persons with disabilities is costly and requires very specialized expertise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"supporting-people-with-disabilities-in-the-workplace\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supporting People with Disabilities in the Workplace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through a series of discussions, seminars and networking opportunities, guests had opportunities to discover innovative technology and engineering designs, share experiences and learn about best practices that support people with disabilities in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following welcoming remarks from Suzanne Blanchard, vice-president (Students and Enrolment), Carleton alumna Yazmine Laroche, deputy minister of Public Service Accessibility, launched the formal program as she discussed the importance of creating accessibility in the federal public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/enableottawa2019?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#enableottawa2019<\/a> is starting strong with Deputy Minister, Public Service Accessibility, Yazmine Laroche kicking things off &#8211; It featured Carleton\u2019s Quayce Thomas, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/timsle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Timsle<\/a> \u2013 an online platform that provides a private accountability network to help people meet their health and wellness goals, and Ke Wang, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eightfoldtech.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eightfold Technology<\/a> and developer of the Smartchair \u2013 a technology that transforms power wheelchairs into smartphone-controlled self-driving vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tetra Society of North America presented <em>Building Solutions Together<\/em>, a discussion that focused on the process of creating assistive devices. National Program Co-ordinator Eric Molendyk shared his experiences of accessibility in the work environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"enhancing-productivity-through-the-use-of-assistive-technologies\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enhancing Productivity Through the use of Assistive Technologies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The David C. Onley initiative facilitated the <em>Accessibility and Technology in the Workplace, Employer Best Practices <\/em>panel. Advocates from Shared Services Canada and Fully Managed explored how employers can support employees and enhance productivity through the use of assistive technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The eventful day wrapped up with a networking exhibition open to guests, including students, graduates and employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the event focused on accessibility for people with disabilities, Vukovic noted there are additional benefits to providing inclusive workplaces.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cInnovation in accessibility, whether through technology or inclusive design, can make workplaces more accessible for persons with disabilities, but also benefit others,\u201d says Vukovic. \u201cFor example, any effort that makes employment more accessible for persons with mental health disabilities will lead to better workplaces for the mental health of all employees.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cTime and time again, inclusive design has proven to benefit our society as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s edition of Enable Ottawa was co-sponsored by the Accessibility Directorate of Ontario, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the TETRA Society of North America.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From public service champions to tech entrepreneurs, Enable Ottawa provided an engaging collection of experts and industry leaders working in the areas of accessibility and assistive technology at an annual event on May 22, 2019.
