It features a design that is both private while preventing isolation from peers. Her design was inspired by the realization that more than half of the museum\u2019s visitors are children.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis got me into doing research on children and the hazards of children using \u201cadult\u201d furniture. I found out there were a surprisingly large amount of cases of children going to the hospital from injuries that were related to using adult furniture. This led me to designing seats that were suitable for children by understanding their physical needs, as well as their emotional and psychology needs,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>She developed a seat for children that spins and rocks, providing a sensory experience that keeps children both occupied and active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"325\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Museum2-400x325.jpg\" alt=\"A circular accessible chair render.\" class=\"wp-image-57028\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Museum2-400x325.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Museum2-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Museum2-200x162.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Museum2.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy keeping the children active and entertained while sitting, it provided time for the parent or guardian to rest,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bamber and Suh won third place for their projects at the National Innovative Design for Accessibility (IDeA) competition last October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trudel says that she hopes the designs are appreciated by the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most innovative part for me as an instructor and professional designer was the resourcefulness and ingenuity of the students to identify gaps that may not always be obvious when we think about accessibility and inclusive design, such as the importance of social inclusion or anthropometrics of specific groups of individuals.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Accessible seating designed by Carleton University\u2019s Industrial Design students has been installed at the Canada Science and Technology Museum.
