Receiving either perfect GPA scores or just a hair short of perfection, these students are thrilled to have their hard work recognized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elyn Rowe is this year\u2019s Chancellor\u2019s Medal winner\u2014an award given to a graduating undergraduate student of outstanding academic achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am very humbled to have been chosen for such a prestigious award,\u201d says Rowe. \u201cUpon receiving notification about the award from the president\u2019s office, I couldn\u2019t put my excitement into words so I just forwarded the email to my parents back home in North Bay, Ont. My mum was over the moon excited about the news. My dad was also very excited and&nbsp;tried to convince me to fly back to accept the medal in person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-57207 size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elyn-Rowe-400x500.jpg\" alt=\"Elyn Rowe\" class=\"wp-image-57207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Elyn-Rowe-400x500.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Elyn-Rowe-300x375.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Elyn-Rowe-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Elyn-Rowe-1400x1750.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Elyn-Rowe-700x875.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Elyn-Rowe-200x250.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Elyn Rowe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Honours <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/neuroscience\/\">Neuroscience<\/a> graduate is already in Vancouver doing doctoral studies in pathology and lab medicine at the University of British Columbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy experience at Carleton was amazing,&#8221; says Rowe. &#8220;I initially chose Carleton because I knew I would get the opportunity to do research as an undergraduate student, but I had no idea just <em>how much<\/em> experience I would get.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So much, in fact, that she was able to jump to PhD studies with an undergraduate degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rowe\u2019s Carleton experience was enhanced by volunteering with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sssc.carleton.ca\/\">Science Student Success Centre<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/outreach.letstalkscience.ca\/ottawa.html\">Let\u2019s Talk Science<\/a> outreach program. She helped pitch and launch a <a href=\"https:\/\/charlatan.ca\/category\/blog\/scienceblog\/\">science blog<\/a> with the <em>Charlatan <\/em>student newspaper, and had her brain-inspired pressed flower art displayed and auctioned off in the Society for Neuroscience\u2019s annual&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/sfn-ottawa.ca\/brain-mental-health-art-show\/\">Brain and Mental Health Art Show<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am endlessly grateful for the opportunities I was given at Carleton, and for the people who supported and mentored me along the way,\u201d says Rowe who spent the majority of her time studying in the Nesbitt Biology Building, but enjoyed breaks in the peace and quiet of the greenhouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"no-stranger-to-winning-awards\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Stranger to Winning Awards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anne McKay is no stranger to winning awards. Having graduated in <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/fall-convocation-retiree-philosophy-student-awarded-chancellors-medal\/\">November<\/a> with a BA in <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/philosophy\/\">Philosophy<\/a> and awarded the Chancellor\u2019s Medal at that time, McKay is now the recipient of the Governor General\u2019s Silver Medal which is only awarded during Spring Convocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel privileged and honoured to have received this amazing award,\u201d says McKay. \u201cMy experience at Carleton was incredible. I returned to university after having been away for 30 years (I am now 56). My sole purpose of returning to school later in life was to study philosophy\u2014something I had longed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-57206 size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"213\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Anne-McKay.jpg\" alt=\"Anne McKay\" class=\"wp-image-57206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Anne-McKay.jpg 213w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Anne-McKay-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Anne McKay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>McKay says she worked very hard for her perfect grade point average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne thing that really helped with all the essay writing required in philosophy was to allow for one week of nothing more than thinking of the essay topic and the next week to actually write it,\u201d says McKay. \u201cI found that walking my dogs was the best time to ruminate over a topic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McKay is now enjoying her retirement and time with her one-year-old grandson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donated by the Governor General of Canada, two undergraduate students standing at the head of the graduating class are receiving the Governor General\u2019s Silver Medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"studying-everywhere-and-anywhere\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Studying Everywhere and Anywhere<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second is Joy McLeod, who will cross the stage to receive an Honours BA in <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/\">Psychology<\/a> with a minor in <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.carleton.ca\/programs\/neuroscience-and-mental-health\/\">Neuroscience and Mental Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel extremely honoured,\u201d says McLeod. \u201cI have a strong affection for Carleton. I transferred to Carleton because life required that I move back to Ottawa and, truthfully, I wasn&#8217;t thrilled about living in Ottawa again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCarleton quickly became my favourite thing about the city, brimming with people as passionate about psychology (and neuroscience) as I am. The trick is not to get too comfortable!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McLeod is excited to continue her studies at Carleton in pursuing her master\u2019s in Psychology under the supervision of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/people\/chris-davis\/\">Prof. Chris Davis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s recipient of the President\u2019s Medal\u2014an award given annually to the student with the highest standing in a general degree program of studies\u2014is Peter Richardson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am honoured to receive this award and am grateful for the support and assistance of Carleton University&nbsp;faculty members throughout my time here,\u201d says Richardson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/convocation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spring Convocation<\/a>&nbsp;is taking place from Monday, June 10 until Friday, June 14.
