It was very well managed and I was able to get my first internship at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Space Agency<\/a> (CSA) after my second year. About three-and-a-half years ago, he took his skills and experience to Bremen, Germany to the <a href=\"http:\/\/eden-iss.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">EDEN ISS<\/a> (International Space Station) project to research the benefits that plants have on long-duration flights &#8211; they not only provide food, but also clean the water and produce oxygen aboard the space station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5812\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_2-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_2-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_2-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_2-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_2-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by the German space research centre, EDEN ISS is funded directly by the European Union through the space exploration branch of Horizon 2020, the largest life-support research project in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s at the EDEN ISS where Bamsey and his colleagues are studying the technology to grow plants on space flights, on other planets and on Earth in challenging environments\u2014the Arctic and Antarctic, for instance.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI lived for four months on a Mars simulation in the Canadian Arctic at the <a href=\"http:\/\/fmars.marssociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station<\/a> [F-Mars]. In 2009, while working at EDEN ISS, Bamsey applied to the astronaut program at the CSA\u2014one of 5,300 \u2014and made it through a battery of physically and emotionally stressful tests to the short list of 16 candidates. Since he didn\u2019t make the final cut, he applied again last year, and is now one of the final 17 candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two finalists should be chosen by this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5813\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_4.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_4-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_4-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_4-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_4-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/make_the_cut_canadian_astronaut_1200w_4-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last batch of gruelling tests was in Halifax, where the candidates had to survive fires and floods through physical strength and ingenuity, while a group of &#8220;20 people with clipboards are writing down how much you sweat and what you do wrong.&#8221; Nonetheless, this optimistic applicant says:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fun being exposed to things you\u2019ve never done before. It\u2019s a tremendous learning experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, his work at EDEN ISS will continue until the end of 2018, with a planned deployment of the plant experiments this October to the Antarctic Neumayer III station. For the nine staff there, having fresh produce\u2014lettuce, strawberries, tomatoes, spinach, cucumbers, peppers&#8211;will boost their morale and their health, since they can\u2019t get supplies flown in for nine winter months when the continent isn\u2019t accessible by either plane or ship. Besides helping the researchers and staff, the project will test various technologies for long-duration space missions to the space station and other planets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until he knows whether or not he\u2019ll go into space, Bamsey will continue to advance and promote space research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSpace exploration, and human space flight, is my passion.
