When the leaves begin to change colour, it is a sure sign the highlight of Carleton University\u2019s autumn calendar is fast approaching. From Sept. 15 to 22, 2019, the campus will welcome thousands of proud alumni and members of the community for Throwback, the annual Homecoming celebration<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The renowned Ravens school spirit will be on full display as people gather to share memories, highlight Carleton\u2019s achievements and celebrate an enduring positive impact in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cWe look forward to welcoming alumni back to campus for Carleton\u2019s seventh annual Throwback celebration,\u201d says Mark Savenkoff, director of Alumni and Donor Relations.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

\u201cThis year, the program has expanded to include over 30 events, ranging from art gallery exhibitions and guest lecturers to milestone reunions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHomecoming is a special time for members of the Carleton community to reconnect with former classmates and professors, learn about exciting developments on campus, and cheer on our Ravens to victory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Class Reunions a Throwback Staple<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wouldn\u2019t be a Homecoming without class reunions. On Sept. 21, the Milestone Anniversary Celebration 2019<\/a> will honour graduates celebrating anniversaries stretching from 25 to 65-year reunions. There\u2019s also the 40th <\/sup>anniversary of the 1979 commerce class<\/a>, a 30th<\/sup> reunion for the Bachelor of Journalism\u2019s 1989 class <\/a>and a 20-year reunion for the commerce class of 1999<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alumni will have other opportunities to mix and mingle throughout the week. On Wednesday, the Faculty of Science<\/a> will host the Science Student Alumni Mixer<\/a>, while Thursday will see the Faculty of Engineering and Design<\/a> host the off-campus Kanata North Alumni Night<\/a>. The departments of Chemistry<\/a> and Economics<\/a> will also hold evening events for returning graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday, Sept. 15 will be a mix of athletics and the arts. In the afternoon, the Ravens men\u2019s<\/a> and women\u2019s soccer<\/a> teams face off against Laurentian University. Meantime, Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) will celebrate the opening of its fall exhibitions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, a noon Kickoff Barbeque<\/a> will be held in the Tory Quad.<\/p>\n\n\n

Events for Students, Faculty, Staff and the Community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday is full of Throwback events, including a daytime job fair for students<\/a> and a salad culinary challenge<\/a>. That evening, a Sprott alumni career panel<\/a> will be held at Shopify, while MacOdrum Library will host Carleton Adapts<\/em><\/a>, where panelists will defend their favourite book-to-movie adaptation with the winning film screened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, Throwback will host two Cinquecento: Carleton Celebrates Leonardo da Vinci<\/em> events. On the floor of the University Centre Galleria, artist Francois Pelletier will start re-creating Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s famous portrait of Lucrezia Crivelli<\/a> using temporary mediums such as chalk and continue his work over three days. Later that night, the lecture Divine Nature of Leonardo<\/em><\/a> by Art History<\/a> Prof. Randi Klebanoff will examine da Vinci\u2019s work through concepts of God and the cosmos that informed his 15th<\/sup> century world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seeking a learning opportunity during the lunch hour? Carleton\u2019s Healthy Workplace will host Mental Health and Well-being in the Transition to University<\/em><\/a> with Psychology<\/a> Prof. Andrea Howard, who will discuss the findings of her study into student success and well-being during the transition to university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the week rolls to Thursday evening, the School of Journalism and Communication<\/a> will host the 2019 Attallah Lecture. This year, Lilie Chouliaraki, chair of the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics, will deliver the talk War on Mobile Phones: Technology and Truth in the Age of Digital Witnessing.<\/em><\/a> For those looking to cheer on the Ravens, the women\u2019s hockey team will face off against the University of New Brunswick that night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Friday edition of Throwback features the Faculty of Public Affairs\u2019 2019 Currents Lecture<\/a> on the federal election. Hosted by alumnus David Coletto, chief executive officer and a founding partner of Abacus Data, an expert panel will discuss pressing issues of the election. The Campus Activity Board will host the first Epic Bingo of the year and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology<\/a> will be kicking off its two-day 50th<\/sup> anniversary celebrations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Ravens Rally Around Football Team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the weekend, Throwback shifts into high gear. The community is invited to a Ravens Rally<\/a> ahead of the Homecoming football game. The rally will feature a performance by Tragically Hip tribute band Little Bones, food trucks, local craft beers by Overflow Brewery and more. Admission is free and donations in support of Carleton\u2019s Fund for Good<\/a> <\/strong>are welcome. The Carleton University Students\u2019 Association will also hold a pep rally<\/a> event at Oliver\u2019s that will feature food, drinks and prizes. The Ravens will take on Waterloo<\/a> in the Throwback match at 1 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those looking to explore Carleton\u2019s beautiful campus prior to the game, MacOdrum Library will be hosting historical campus walking tours<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throwback wraps up on Sunday, Sept. 22 with two Ravens teams taking to the field. Men\u2019s soccer<\/a> will face opponents from the Royal Military College of Canada, while women\u2019s rugby<\/a> squares off against Laval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2019 chapter of Throwback will close with a celebration of the restoration<\/a> of a 5,200-pipe Casavant organ \u2013 the centerpiece of a new performing arts space at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre<\/a> \u2013\u2013 with an afternoon of storytelling, music and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From expert panels and community rallies to athletic excellence \u2013 Throwback is sure to have something for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n
