she said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;But it&#8217;s important to remember that he was a Christian.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Klebanoff explored the idea in <em>The Divine Nature of Leonardo<\/em>, a talk she gave on Sept. 18, 2019 as part of Carleton&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/leonardo2019\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cinquecento<\/a> celebrations. Thinking of da Vinci as a secular scientist misses a complete view of his study of nature, which he pursued in his world-renowned paintings as well as his famous sketchbooks of anatomy and biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Klebanoff used the techniques and content in some of da Vinci&#8217;s paintings to demonstrate his Christian view of the world. She examined his <em>Madonna of the Rocks<\/em>,<em> The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne<\/em> and <em>The Mona Lisa<\/em> and pointed out their finer details for the audience<em>. <\/em>The painter didn&#8217;t stop at an understanding of the material world, said Klebanoff, but somehow portrayed the mystery of the world&#8217;s true nature, which is unseen.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Beauty was thought to be the manifestation in the world of the perfection of God,&#8221; said Klebanoff.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;God, in other words, puts beauty in the world so that the eyes and soul will yearn to him through love. As explained by medieval theologian Nicholas de Cusa in the 15th century, this is one way to understand the transcendence of God in all things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The eyes follow you everywhere, and the gaze is on everyone, intimately, as if it sees no one else. Klebanoff argued that <em>The Mona Lisa<\/em> and her small smile\u2014is that a smile?\u2014show something beyond direct observation and experience of the natural world.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;What Leonardo is doing, I think, is having us imagine that a kind of switch has been flipped in our normal way of seeing,&#8221; said Klebanoff.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really in his paintings of naturalistic images composed of seemingly impossible coincidences of opposites, the palpably real and the impossible to pin down.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His paintings prove, she said, that purely empirical research can&#8217;t uncover everything there is to find in the natural world. Because, as da Vinci once wrote, painters who study nature&#8217;s works find &#8220;a way to understand the creator of so many admirable things, and this is the way to love such a great inventor.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton\u2019s year-long Cinquecento celebration marks 500 years since da Vinci&#8217;s death in 1519.
