and act as a springboard to foster student success and social change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three-year <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/teachinglearning\/awards\/internal-awards\/innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chair in Teaching Innovation<\/a> appointment will be awarded to educators who have demonstrated teaching excellence and innovation across their academic careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funded by <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teaching and Learning Services<\/a>, with support from the <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic)<\/a>, the initiative will provide faculty members with $45,000 spanning three years to undertake scholarly projects to advance teaching excellence at Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of the initiative is to recognize Carleton\u2019s top educators and encourage faculty to develop a scholarly approach to teaching and learning across the university, with a particular emphasis on strategies to foster student success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are committed to teaching, learning and innovation at Carleton,\u201d says David Hornsby, associate vice-president (Teaching and Learning).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAs an institution, it is important that we provide these opportunities for our faculty to engage in reflection and to take a research-led approach to their teaching practices because, ultimately, it will lead to greater student success and positive social change.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Chair in Teaching Innovation enhances the Discovery Centre Fellowship as Carleton\u2019s top teaching award to provide more resources and enable faculty members to undertake more in-depth research and scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As recipients of the 2019 Discovery Centre Fellowship, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/people\/adrian-melanie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melanie Adrian<\/a> (Department of Law and Legal Studies) and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/polisci\/people\/sucharov-mira\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mira Sucharov<\/a> (Department of Political Science) have been appointed as inaugural chairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of Carleton University, I am pleased to acknowledge and congratulate Melanie Adrian and Mira Sucharov on this Carleton alumni and students, including those from Adrian\u2019s fourth-year law seminar entitled \u201cAcademia and Activism\u201d attended the 1.5-day event that combined theory, practice and models of advocacy in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-medium wp-image-61660\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"526\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Prof.-Melanie-Adrian-4-400x526.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Prof.-Melanie-Adrian-4-400x526.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Prof.-Melanie-Adrian-4-300x395.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Prof.-Melanie-Adrian-4-768x1011.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Prof.-Melanie-Adrian-4-700x921.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Prof.-Melanie-Adrian-4-200x263.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Prof.-Melanie-Adrian-4.jpg 912w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Prof. Melanie Adrian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Working with <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scholars-at-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carleton Scholars at Risk<\/a> and the global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scholarsatrisk.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scholars at Risk<\/a> network, initiatives that advocate for scholars who are imprisoned or discriminated against because of their research, Adrian\u2019s students learned how to create an advocacy platform that was put into action throughout the semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These types of experiences help support the particular scholar, but they are also a reflection of how theory and practice can be linked to help students professionalize and build international networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond creating high-impact experiential learning practices and building students\u2019 skills, Adrian says she is using the project as a way to reflect on how Carleton\u2019s core mission translates to the classroom in a way that makes sense for students pursuing their dreams and professional ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI am both pleased and honoured to receive this distinction and this award,\u201d Adrian said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am so thrilled that Carleton University has created these chairs and is focusing research, time and resources on better understanding pedagogy at the university level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"sucharov-spearheading-course-simulations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sucharov Spearheading Course Simulations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sucharov (Political Science) will develop two role-play course simulations that involve a direct analysis of the dynamics of power, privilege and oppression. Sucharov\u2019s goal is to help students learn the material more fully and in an enveloping way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sucharov, who has won every major teaching award at Carleton in addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/polisci\/2017\/21573\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Teaching Award<\/a> \u2013 the highest post-secondary teaching distinction in Ontario \u2013 says that the new Chair in Teaching Innovation appointment signals that the academy, and Carleton University specifically, values teaching and taking risks in teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI love the moment-to-moment and face-to-face dynamism of teaching in real time,\u201d she said. \u201cParallel to this, I\u2019ve always been passionate about chipping away at the problem of suffering in the Israeli-Palestinian relationship. At minimum, I hope to help my students think about how to be more engaged global citizens.
