Our actions matter, and together we can continue to build Carleton\u2019s culture of respect where everyone is included.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a moment of silence, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/equity\/profile\/ikram-jama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ikram Jama<\/a>, Human Rights and Equity Advisor with Carleton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/equity\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Equity and Inclusive Communities<\/a>, described how she arrived in Canada in 1989 as a refugee and found this massacre at a post-secondary institution so shocking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne hope I had was to go to university,\u201d Jama told the crowd. \u201cWould university be the safe haven I imagined it to be?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-62126\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/dec6-ikram-benoit-1200x680.jpg\" alt=\"President Benoit-Antoine Bacon and Ikram Jama, Advisor on Human Rights and Equity, stand together in the Tory lobby.\" class=\"wp-image-62126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/dec6-ikram-benoit-1200x680.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/dec6-ikram-benoit-1200x680-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/dec6-ikram-benoit-1200x680-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/dec6-ikram-benoit-1200x680-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/dec6-ikram-benoit-1200x680-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/dec6-ikram-benoit-1200x680-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">President Benoit-Antoine Bacon and Ikram Jama, Advisor on Human Rights and Equity<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Citing recent news of inadequate spaces at Ottawa\u2019s five Violence Against Women shelters to accommodate the demand, Jama also remarked that women with marginalized identities are at greater risk for harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can all be agents of positive change,\u201d she said. \u201cWe must embrace courage and we are all responsible for ending gender-based violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She finds hope everyday as she arrives at Carleton and passes by the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/equity\/focus\/sexual-violence-prevention-survivor-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sexual Assault Support Centre<\/a> where students are ready to provide peer support to fellow students who have experienced sexual violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/womensstudies\/people\/ann-cvetkovich\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ann Cvetkovich<\/a> is the director of Carleton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/womensstudies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pauline Jewett Institute of Women\u2019s and Gender Studies<\/a>.
