of big steps toward becoming a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a year-long process that engaged the whole community, Carleton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sip\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Strategic Integrated Plan<\/a> (SIP) was approved by the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/secretariat\/boardofgovernors\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Board of Governors<\/a> at its June 2 meeting on the heels of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/senate\/2020\/inside-senate-may-29-2020\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Senate<\/a> approving the SIP on May 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan will be finalized over the summer, including a full design treatment, and will be officially launched in the fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-59538\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1197\" height=\"680\" of our communities, our society and our planet&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe hold ourselves to a responsibility to make a difference for the greater good. It frames our values and our commitments. And it is the point from which we navigate to a bright and hopeful future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The western side of the triangle follows the iconic Rideau Canal. This counterbalance, the document says, serves as a reminder \u201cthat the cost of progress is not borne equally by all people\u201d and that \u201cinnovation and effort can respond to real societal challenges, but only if both the burdens and the rewards of knowledge are shared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The eastern border of the triangle is marked by Bronson Avenue, an important arterial road that links the university to the community, from local neighbourhoods to the cultural and political core of downtown Ottawa, as well as to the airport \u2014 \u201cthe gateway to the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This direction \u2014 \u201cServe Ottawa, Serve the World\u201d \u2014 will encourage community engagement in research and learning, and the development of partnerships with purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rideau River \u2014 Pasapkedjinawong to the Anishinaabeg \u2014 flows along the southern axis of the triangle, \u201cmoving forward to a prosperous future with momentum and resilience, reminding us of our connection to the natural world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sip-2020-approved-1200w-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66704\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/sip-2020-approved-1200w-5.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/sip-2020-approved-1200w-5-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/sip-2020-approved-1200w-5-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/sip-2020-approved-1200w-5-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/sip-2020-approved-1200w-5-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/sip-2020-approved-1200w-5-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Summarized as \u201cStrive for Wellness, Strive for Sustainability,\u201d this direction calls upon the Carleton community to enhance personal wellness and growth, to be a national and international leader in both sustainability and accessibility, and to learn and take action together to achieve reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, these three powerful directions, the SIP declares, frame \u201ceverything we stand for at Carleton: the power of higher education and innovation, the value we place on community and collaboration, and the importance of sustainability and wellness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These themes are especially relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic, when innovative action and new solutions are more critical than ever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCarleton is beginning the first steps in a journey of unknowns in a time of turmoil,\u201d says SIP task force member Patricia McGuire, an Indigenous knowledge scholar from the School of Social Work. \u201cThis takes courage and perseverance and a willingness to explore all sides. This land calls to us for kindness, compassion, gentleness and a willingness to be open to new ideas and concepts. You have a strategic planning opportunity here to shape what the future could look like and it\u2019s exciting to see an institution willing to accept a certain level of risk and to think big.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of the winter term, the SIP Task Force published a progress report to share a summary of the feedback received.
