She is a part of Carleton\u2019s&nbsp;award-winning alumni mentors program and was featured in their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.carleton.ca\/story\/finding-connection-through-helping-others\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital mentorship impact series<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Hanna Stewart chose to study at Carleton for the people. From the moment she stepped onto campus for her first open house, she felt welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt like those trying to help me navigate my way on campus, find the open house, answer all the questions I had, generally took an interest in me and wanted me to be a part of the Ravens family,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-67069\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/hanna-stewart-800w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Hanna Stewart\" class=\"wp-image-67069\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/hanna-stewart-800w-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/hanna-stewart-800w-1-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/hanna-stewart-800w-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/hanna-stewart-800w-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/hanna-stewart-800w-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/hanna-stewart-800w-1-700x700.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/hanna-stewart-800w-1-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hanna Stewart<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally from Ottawa, Stewart was deciding between universities with her high school guidance counsellor when she received a phone call from her future undergraduate adviser that sold her on Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe made me feel as though I would be a student, a friendly face in the fall, and not just a student number,\u201d Stewart says. \u201cThat held true for both of my degrees at Carleton and I am happy to share that part of my story with others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"bringing-research-to-life\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bringing Research to Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Stewart completed her undergraduate degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canadian Studies<\/a> in 2018 and continued her studies the following fall in the<a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.carleton.ca\/cu-programs\/sociology-masters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Master of Arts, Sociology<\/a> program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her thesis, The identity formation of Chinese-Canadian adoptees, studied societal pressures and expectations adoptees face in understanding themselves. As a Chinese-Canadian adoptee herself, Stewart wanted to learn more about her identity and the experience of others in this shared community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her research explored the connections adoptees have to their home in Canada, what they left behind in their country of origin, and the racism and stereotypes they encountered over their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMy overall experience in the program has been rewarding to say the least,\u201d says Stewart. \u201cI was able to improve my communication, interpersonal and research skills these last two years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Throughout the program, she created long-lasting connections with professors and classmates while developing a better understanding of what it means to be a Chinese-Canadian adoptee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"connecting-with-the-carleton-community\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connecting with the Carleton Community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to her experience inside the classroom, Stewart was actively engaged in activities on campus. She was involved in departmental societies throughout her undergraduate and graduate degrees, and student clubs such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bestbuddies.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Best Buddies<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CarletonUniversityTerryFoxClub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Fox Club<\/a>. Stewart also worked at the Undergraduate Recruitment Office as a campus tour guide, welcoming prospective students and guests to campus.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cTo me, getting involved is important for networking and community development,\u201d says Stewart.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Through her involvement, she was able to connect with the Carleton community and further enrich her degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe value of student involvement to me meant I was contributing to a community that has given me so much,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-next-chapter\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Next Chapter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Stewart has a post-graduation bucket list which includes swimming in Greek waters and trying gelato in Italy. The undergraduate supervisor turned department chair has become a valuable contact who Stewart keeps in touch with regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Stewart reflects on her time at Carleton, she recalls the initial phone call she received from Thompson back in 2013. Stewart remembers being very nervous about starting university and asking, what she thought, were silly questions like: \u201cCan I eat in class?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout their conversation, Thompson reassured her there are no silly questions and she would adjust to life at Carleton just fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was right,\u201d she explains. It took some time to get used to the new routine, but looking back, she\u2019s thankful she asked those questions. Prospective students have since asked her the same questions during campus tours.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t thank him enough for the continued support and encouragement throughout the six, going on seven, years of knowing him,\u201d she shares.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Stewart says she\u2019s also grateful for the patience and understanding of Prof. Alexis Shotwell, her graduate supervisor, as she navigated the ups and downs of graduate school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also credits her family and friends for pushing her to be the best version of herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/our-stories\/\">More Stories<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following her graduation with a Master of Arts in Sociology in spring 2020, Hanna&nbsp;Stewart has worked as a Policy, Research, and Data Management Officer and a Business Project Officer at the Department of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada.
