Egypt\u2019s Valley of the Kings and the sunbaked 1,000-year-old temples of Bagan, Myanmar, to the ancient homes on Bahrain\u2019s Pearl Road and the earthquake-damaged earthen buildings in Katmandu, Carleton University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cee\/people\/santana-quintero-mario\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mario Santana Quintero<\/a> is painstakingly working to document and preserve some of the world\u2019s most important heritage sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Santana Quintero, an Architectural Conservation and Sustainability professor, and his students spend long days in these historic places with conservators from local governments and non-profits such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getty.edu\/conservation\/\" target=\"_blank\">Getty Conservation Institute<\/a> (GCI), laser scanning and taking detailed photographs of the structures and their decorated interiors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-6814\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" cutting-edge technologies is used to generate digital maps and models that can help guide conservation and restoration efforts, and create immersive virtual tours of the sites.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIn our field, what we try to do is show the processes of decay that are impacting historical structures and surfaces such as painted walls,\u201d says Santana Quintero, who runs the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/heritageengineering\/\" target=\"_blank\">NSERC CREATE<\/a> Heritage Engineering research and training program out of the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (<a href=\"http:\/\/cims.carleton.ca\/#\/home\" target=\"_blank\">CIMS<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo do this, we need to understand the current conditions, and what mechanisms affect these conditions, and at what rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThink about a city,\u201d he continues. \u201cIf we replace everything with new buildings, people won\u2019t be able to appreciate the layers of history and evolution. Heritage sites are carriers of knowledge and sense of place, and we need to be careful about how we conserve and protect them. We want them to transcend history and share their stories with future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-6807 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6807\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_5.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_5-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_5-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_5-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_5-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_5-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"protecting-egypts-iconic-tombs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Protecting Egypt\u2019s iconic tombs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Last March, Santana Quintero and Heritage Engineering master\u2019s student, Alex Federman, spent nearly two weeks digitally documenting the tombs of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getty.edu\/conservation\/our_projects\/field_projects\/tut\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Tutankhamen<\/a> and Queen Nefertari along with the GCI\u2019s Lori Wong, conservation technologist Christian Ouimet from the Canadian government\u2019s Heritage Conservation Services, and staff from Egypt\u2019s Ministry of Antiquities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These sites, which the GCI began working to protect when their assistance was requested by the Egyptian government, are very significant yet also vulnerable to deterioration, exacerbated by high levels of visitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-6817\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_7.jpg\" alt=\"Global Heritage Conservation: Despite mitigation measures, Tutankhamen\u2019s tomb is vulnerable to damage from visitors.\" class=\"wp-image-6817\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_7.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_7-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_7-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_7-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_7-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_7-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Despite mitigation measures, Tutankhamen\u2019s tomb is vulnerable to damage from visitors.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTutankhamen\u2019s tomb is iconic in the annals of Egyptology and archeology in general because of the electric story of it discovery in 1922, and by virtue of the incredible treasures that were found inside,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getty.edu\/conservation\/publications_resources\/newsletters\/13_1\/gcinews12.html\" target=\"_blank\">Neville Agnew<\/a>, a senior principal project specialist with the GCI who directs the Tutankhamen project and has been working in Egypt since he joined the institute in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact of visitors includes physical damage from people touching the walls and heat from lighting equipment used by film crews, says Agnew, as well as super-fine dust brought inside and kicked up by visitors, and the atmospheric impacts of humidity and carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mitigation measures have been effective. An open grid on the floor near the entrance and a filtered air ventilation system, for example, help minimize dust. A viewing platform was moved to prevent visitors from touching walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Nefertari\u2019s tomb, much of the current documentation work will help conservators establish a baseline of the current condition of the wall paintings \u2014&nbsp;and because the models and data will be available as an archive in the years ahead, they will play a key role in monitoring the condition of the paintings moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis is a critical component of any good conservation project,\u201d says Agnew. \u201cIt makes it possible to quantitatively say there have been damages or changes, and can help diagnose the cause of these changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>High-tech documentation techniques, he adds, make it easier to disseminate and manipulate the information that\u2019s collected, and easier to use it for interpretive or educational purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agnew, who has led conservation projects around the world, from the Laetoli hominid trackway in Tanzania to the historic city centre of Quito, Ecuador, praises Santana Quintero\u2019s contribution to the work in Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s an excellent field man \u2014 unflappable, cheerful, very imaginative and hardworking,\u201d says Agnew. \u201cHe\u2019s also a very patient teacher.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-6808 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6808\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_3-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_3-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_3-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_3-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/from_tuts_tomb_ancient_temples_1200w_3-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"hands-on-heritage-conservation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hands-on heritage conservation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Federman, who accompanied Santana Quintero in Egypt, is an NSERC CREATE student. The program provides students with hands-on opportunities to work and learn in the built heritage industry in addition to earning a university degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a multi-disciplinary program, with opportunities for Carleton students in Engineering, Architecture, Information Technology and Indigenous and Canadian Studies. You never know when you\u2019ll have another opportunity like that.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe state of the wall paintings, in some areas, was remarkably good. And the level of detail on the sarcophagus \u2026&nbsp;I wish I knew how to read hieroglyphics.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Federman, who will graduate this fall, has allocated about one-third of his master\u2019s thesis to Tutankhamen\u2019s tomb. The rest will cover digital documentation work at Nepean\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thelogfarm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Log Farm<\/a> \u2014&nbsp;a mid-1800s family-farm-turned-sugar-bush just off Highway 416 in southwest Ottawa \u2014&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pc.gc.ca\/en\/lhn-nhs\/mb\/prince\" target=\"_blank\">Prince of Wales Fort<\/a>, an 18<sup>th<\/sup> century stone compound in Churchill, Manitoba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the summer of 2016, Federman spent four days using a drone to take aerial photos of Prince of Wales Fort to help create a digital model. At the Log Farm, which he visited once each week or two throughout last fall, he has helped create a record of its vernacular architecture, including 3D models, both for posterity and to help direct potential restoration work. In fact, that\u2019s the focus of some of the projects, such as the work on Bahrain\u2019s Pearl Road. The route is being documented and mapped to assist conservation and tourism efforts, and locals are being trained in the latest digital documentation techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International experience and capacity building are also central to the work in Bagan, the ancient capital of the kingdom that eventually became Myanmar.
