awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/convocation\/medals-awards-spring-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University Medal for Outstanding Graduate Work<\/a> at the PhD level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last three years, Zabihollahy has spent countless hours developing a computer-aided detection method to identify abnormalities in the body, such as cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was really happy, because you realize that your work and all the hard work you have done has been recognized,\u201d Zabihollahy said about winning the medal, which is bestowed annually during convocation to one outstanding student, when merited. \u201cAnd actually, it doesn&#8217;t just represent my work, but all the teamwork.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fatemeh Zabihollahy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Her thesis, \u201cDeep Learning Methods for Abnormality Detection and Segmentation in Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Images,\u201d focused on analyzing 3D body images with artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her research allowed clinical professionals \u2014 including cardiologists and radiologists \u2014 to analyze images more accurately and efficiently compared to other studies and methods.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAdvances in technology have increased the number of medical images to interpret,\u201d Zabihollahy explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cImaging studies may now consist of hundreds or thousands of images. Back then, she was debating between finding a job in the capital or going back to studying.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhen you&#8217;re working in engineering fields, you need to update your knowledge and acquire new skills,\u201d said Zabihollahy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Before making her decision, she came to Carleton\u2019s campus to meet with Aerospace Engineering Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mae\/profile\/mojtaba-ahmadi\/\">Mojtaba Ahmadi<\/a>. After an hour-long conversation, he told Zabihollahy, \u201cIf you come back to school, you won&#8217;t regret it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After that, she chose to pursue a master\u2019s degree, followed by her recent doctoral studies at Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI learned a lot during my PhD studies,\u201d she said, \u201cwhich is not limited to just technical stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her doctoral studies, Zabihollahy published eight journal papers as the lead author, although her first attempt was not successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, she pitched to a top journal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embs.org\/tmi\/\"><em>IEEE TMI<\/em><\/a>. After receiving feedback from four different reviewers, Zabihollahy spent seven months addressing and answering all of their comments. When she resubmitted the paper, with all the new edits, the journal decided not to publish her research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStill, I am really grateful for those reviewers because I learned a lot,\u201d said Zabihollahy.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI am also grateful to my supervisor, Systems and Computer Engineering Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sce\/people\/ukwatta\/\">Eranga Ukwatta<\/a>, for his continuous support during my PhD studies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Zabihollahy is looking into the University of California, Los Angeles or John Hopkins University for a postdoctoral program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s very important that when people decide to pursue their studies, especially for PhD, they really love their field of research,\u201d she said, \u201cand that they are ready to dedicate a lot of time to their research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/our-stories\/\">More Stories<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recent Carleton University doctoral graduate Fatemeh Zabihollahy has been awarded the University Medal for Outstanding Graduate Work at the PhD level.
