It cost $3.50 per can and $1 from each sale went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedwayeo.ca\/united-for-refugees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United for Refugees<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.refugee613.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Refugee 613<\/a> to help resettle refugees in Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That now seems like a minor effort, says McJannett, but at the time it felt risky. The day the beer was released, hundreds of customers lined up. By 3 p.m., the 8,000-can run had sold out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although that beer disappeared quickly, the sentiment remained: <em>How can we help?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its six years, Dominion City has built a brand of craft beer in colourful cans made from locally-sourced grains, hops and yeasts. The brewery\u2019s co-founders \u2014 McJannett and fellow Carleton graduates Andrew Kent and Alex Monk&nbsp;(who is no longer with the company)&nbsp;\u2014 regularly point out that beer and community go hand-in-hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beer is ideal for social gatherings and for celebrations, and by partnering with local causes and charities \u2014 often planning out such efforts over pints \u2014 the brewery redefines the term \u201csocial lubricant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dominion City followed up Buck-A-Beer with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dominioncity.ca\/products\/safer-shores-ipa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Safer Shores IPA<\/a> to raise funds for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.matthewhouseottawa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew House Ottawa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cartyhouse.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carty House<\/a>, two charities that support refugee claimants in Ottawa. Last year it raised more than $2,500 and the initiative has relaunched this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its latest annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dominioncity.ca\/blogs\/news\/make-it-grain-for-a-great-local-cause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Makin\u2019 it Grain<\/a> beer and food festival raised funds for <a href=\"https:\/\/operationcomehome.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Operation Come Home<\/a>, which supports and engages homeless and at-risk youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now McJannett is using his platform to push for more diversity in the craft beer industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with Kitchener, Ontario-based consultant Ren Navarro and her company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beer-diversity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beer. Diversity.<\/a>, Dominion City created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dominioncity.ca\/blogs\/news\/diversity-in-brewing-scholarship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a scholarship<\/a> in Niagara College\u2019s brewing program for students from underrepresented communities. It is also a seed funder of the Canadian Brewery Inclusion Toolkit, a forthcoming set of training materials by Beer. They gained steam with a taproom attached to the brewery thanks to $20,000 raised through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/2095684950\/dominion-city-brewing-co-community-supported-beer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kickstarter<\/a> campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From inception, the brewers used local supplies to make their beers. They brainstormed ideas around how Dominion City and Cote\u2019s restaurant, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebirchbite.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Birch Bite<\/a>, could collaborate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, they hunted, harvested and foraged food from the Kitigan Zibi area to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dominioncity.ca\/blogs\/news\/the-good-way\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Good Way<\/a>: a cattail root and sumac IPA and a four-course, Indigenous-inspired dinner that took place last November. That\u2019s how we are going to empower each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the average Canadian, reconciliation can often feel abstract. It\u2019s difficult to know what kind of practical things one can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McJannett says that his community is looking for ways to help \u2014 which is exemplified by the fact that fundraising dinners and beers sell out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McJannett hopes his community-focused brewery can help find more ways forward.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIn the last number of years, a lot of what I thought I understood has definitely been challenged,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat can sometimes feel a little tricky or alienating. It&#8217;s unsettling.
