Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on Indigenous and Northern studies, post-secondary education, research and access for learners during a virtual ceremony on Sept. 9, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton President <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/president\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Benoit-Antoine Bacon<\/a> was joined online by Chief Simon Mervyn, discussed the importance of the 1973 document <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyfn.ca\/agreements\/together-today-for-our-children-tomorrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow.<\/a> He also emphasized that the First Nation will lead the choice of areas of research, the choice of researchers, involve local people, and be a repository for the research results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, we celebrate a partnership that will promote the advancement of higher education, research, and training in ways that are beneficial to us, our students and the university,\u201d said Mervyn. \u201cTogether, we will build educational and training opportunities that reflect our culture, language and knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The virtual event included traditional music and an introductory prayer. It was moderated by Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sics\/people\/kahente-horn-miller\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Kahente Horn-Miller<\/a> of Carleton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sics\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies<\/a>. She explained the agreement was rooted in the 40-year relationship between Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/geography\/people\/burn-chris\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Burn<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/northernstudies\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Northern Studies<\/a>, his students and the people of Na-Cho Nyak Dun. With your intimate and traditional knowledge and our abstract approach, together we will enjoy every step of the journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Burn expressed his appreciation for the opportunity his students will have to work with Mervyn, his staff and the welcoming community of Mayo, Yukon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research and learning partnership will draw on both traditional Indigenous knowledge and non-Indigenous knowledge to inform and enrich research and teaching.
