Originally, these innovations were designed with people with disabilities in mind; an approach known as accessible design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, in Carleton\u2019s Paterson Hall, a new way to call an elevator without touching its panel buttons offers a kind of curb cut effect. And with COVID-19 hitting, we realized the benefits of the project went even further.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Carleton University has been acknowledged by its peers as the most accessible university, and more recently has acted as a catalyst for research and applied design in many sectors. It focuses on academic programs and training opportunities in accessibility, disabilities and inclusion but it also fosters interdisciplinary research to inform applied development and design in accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In summer 2018, local accessibility tech company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eightfoldtech.com\/team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eightfold Technologies<\/a> was already on campus adding Google Home modules in some residences for students in the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/attendant-services-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Attendant Services Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"259\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/elevator-250w-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-70191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/elevator-250w-2.jpg 250w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/elevator-250w-2-200x207.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Eightfold was founded by software engineer Ke Wang who created a SmartChair platform to turn any motorized wheelchair into an autonomous vehicle. In 2016, Wang launched another business called ProtoDev Canada as a contract prototyper for all kinds of accessibility products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Mellway asked offhandedly in a meeting if an elevator could be automated, Wang said it could. Rob Dotten, ProtoDev Canada\u2019s Director of Accessibility Initiatives took the lead on the Paterson Hall project.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe primary focus of our development was to bring accessibility to everyone,\u201d says Dotten, who began developing the technology in September 2018.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor an agile company like us, two years is a long time. It integrates seamlessly with the buttons in an elevator or into the automatic door operator and can be installed in less than an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"528\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/elevator-250w-1.jpg\" alt=\"ProtoDev Canada app\" class=\"wp-image-70188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/elevator-250w-1.jpg 250w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/elevator-250w-1-200x422.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The pilot elevator was installed in December 2019 and demonstrated throughout the winter. Assistant Vice-President (Facilities Management and Planning) Gary Nower, who provided key funding for the initial engineering, hoped to see the Paterson Hall pilot expand across campus. Soon it will, with five new Contactless Access elevators installed in the Richcraft and Canal buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The success for ProtoDev Canada, however, is going much further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toronto Pearson Airport has installed their own six-elevator pilot of the Contactless Access App, which could lead to many more installations in Canada\u2019s busiest airport. It was also wonderful to see the level of engagement and support across the university, including the READ Initiative and Facilities Management and Planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Marshall, who is a co-primary investigator with Chan in <a href=\"https:\/\/cudisabilityresearchgroup.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carleton University\u2019s Disability Research Group<\/a>, documented the whole pilot process from inception to installation. The multidisciplinary group of researchers creates <a href=\"https:\/\/cudisabilityresearchgroup.wordpress.com\/our-exhibits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">virtual exhibits<\/a> to raise awareness and questions about societal understandings of disability and technology.
