He started talking about his impressions of Canada after almost 30 years of polling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCanadians have a lot of misconceptions, such as our belief in the Great White North and the land of pond hockey,\u201d he explained. \u201cThat\u2019s the Canada of 1975.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This sort of surprising revelation happened again and again in my conversations with alumni profiled in <em>75 for the 75<sup>th<\/sup>. <\/em>Once they got going, they seemed to appreciate the chance to reflect on their time in their chosen field, as well as their careers, with a receptive listener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our discussions inevitably yielded bits of wisdom that stayed with me and changed my understanding of everything from the meaning of contemporary art (<a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/jonathan-shaughnessy\/\">Jonathan Shaughnessy<\/a>) to the diversity of Indonesian wildlife (<a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/gail-steckley\/\">Gail Steckley<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allow me to share just a few of the themes that emerged along the way:<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-7124 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_2-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_2-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_2-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_2-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_2-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"perseverance-pays-off\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perseverance pays off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/abdulqafar-abdullahi\/\">Abdul Abdullahi<\/a> came to Canada following the collapse of Somalia. He already had two university degrees, but he took an entry-level internship at a publishing company while pursuing an MA in Economics. That gave him a foothold that allowed him to resume his career and eventually assist Somalia in its rebuilding process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing up, Justice <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/kimberley-crosbie\/\">Kimberley Crosbie<\/a> lived in small-town Ontario and had a challenging home life. She struggled in Grade 13, but was accepted to Carleton and went on to earn a BA and masters in Law and Legal Studies. She now serves on the Ontario Court of Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/jeremy-greenwood\/\">Jeremy Greenwood<\/a>, now a professor of Economics at the University of Pennsylvania, had no intention of attending university. But an early stint as a custodian led to second thoughts. That, and a professor who turned him on to the subject he loves. She considered pursuing a PhD in Canadian Studies, but a professor convinced her to \u201cuse the tools of political science to think through governance outside of the Western framework.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Kiera Ladner is the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Politics and Governance at the University of Manitoba. She consults with Indigenous groups around the world about governance, treaty implementation and constitutional rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several of the economists in the <em>75 for the 75<sup>th<\/sup><\/em> group found mentors at Carleton as well. Jeremy Greenwood<em> (above) <\/em>and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/timothy-lane\/\">Timothy Lane<\/a>, deputy governor of the Bank of Canada, remembered professors who \u201chelped us master the content, but also encouraged us to look for the weak spots in everything we learned,\u201d Lane recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was one of several among the 75 who thought they were on one career path (a university professor) but ended up pursuing another. Which leads to lesson No. 3 . . .<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-7126 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_4.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_4-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_4-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_4-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_4-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_4-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"you-cant-predict-the-future\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">You can\u2019t predict the future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/philipreny\/\">Philip Reny<\/a>, a professor of Economics at the University of Chicago, began his career as a keyboardist for a rock band called \u201cMainstream.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MP <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/scott-reid\/\">Scott Reid<\/a> was an aspiring writer and novelist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/jennifer-breakspear\/\">Jennifer Breakspear<\/a>, executive director of PHS Community Services Society in Vancouver, spent 10 years as a paramedic before enrolling in the Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management (BPAPM) program at Carleton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI discovered I loved going to school, chewing over new material and engaging with professors and students about ideas,\u201d recalls Breakspear, who used her degree to transition into social services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, changing careers can be tricky. But the <em>75 for the 75<sup>th<\/sup><\/em> were willing to make bold career moves. That dissipated after <em>Newsworld<\/em> aired the Oka standoff live in the summer of 1990. McQueen went on to occupy executive offices at the Discovery Channel and CTV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/firdaus-kharas\/\">Firdaus Kharas<\/a> surprised his public service colleagues when he left a foreign affairs job in 1995 to start Chocolate Moose Media, a company that uses media for social change. He now produces public service announcements that air in 45 languages in more than 100 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/mark-mackinnon\/\">Mark MacKinnon\u2019s<\/a> summer internship plans fizzled, he called up newspapers in South Africa and offered to work for free. Now he\u2019s the senior international correspondent for the<em> Globe and Mail<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-7128 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_6.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_6-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_6-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_6-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_6-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/celebrating_carletons_75th_1200w_6-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"and-of-course-do-what-you-love\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">And of course, do what you love<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery day I come to work and think: \u2018I\u2019m doing something pretty amazing\u2019,\u201d says Secretary of the Treasury Board <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/yaprak-baltacioglu\/\">Yaprak Baltac\u0131o\u011flu<\/a>. \u201cThe idea that a foreign-born adult could come to a country and end up with this job would not happen anywhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/james-duthie\/\">James Duthie<\/a>, the host of The Sports Network (TSN), is also humbled by his good fortune. \u201cFor me to be able to turn a career into going to great events and talking about them is still somewhat mind-boggling,\u201d he says. \u201cOnce the show starts, it\u2019s nothing but fun. I never feel like I\u2019m working.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/story\/brian-tardif\/\">Brian Tardif<\/a> has been the CEO of Citizen Advocacy Ottawa, an advocacy group for people with disabilities, for 30 years. But on Sept. 15, 2017, many of them will sit down with their former professors and current students at a dinner hosted by the Faculty of Public Affairs in Richcraft Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I\u2019ve never met most of them in person, I look forward to welcoming them back to campus like old friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I learned something from every one of these alumni.
