Carleton University\u2019s Board of Governors has announced that Yaprak Baltacio\u011flu<\/a> has been reappointed as Carleton\u2019s Chancellor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An alumna of Carleton\u2019s School of Public Policy and Administration (SPPA)<\/a>, Baltacio\u011flu  was appointed Carleton\u2019s 12th<\/sup> Chancellor in 2018 after serving as Canada\u2019s Secretary of the Treasury Board from 2012 to 2018, where she provided advice and recommendations to the Treasury Board committee of ministers on how the federal government spends money on programs and services, how it regulates and how it is managed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is my great honour to be asked to serve another term as chancellor of Carleton University,\u201d said Baltacio\u011flu.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cI am grateful to have the opportunity to serve my alma mater and to offer guidance and congratulations to our students as they transition into the next chapter of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Carleton\u2019s Chancellor presides over Convocation ceremonies, conferring degrees, diplomas and certificates on graduating students, and serves as an ambassador for the university. Baltacio\u011flu most recently addressed graduates during a virtual Graduation Ceremony<\/a> for the November 2020 graduating class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are so fortunate to have a leader and mentor as distinguished as Yaprak Baltacio\u011flu to serve as our Chancellor,\u201d said Carleton President Benoit-Antoine Bacon. \u201cShe truly embodies the aspirations of our students and is a wonderful ambassador for Carleton in the broader community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Turkey, Baltacio\u011flu came to Canada at the age of 21 after earning a law degree at Istanbul University. She became interested in Canadian democracy and applied to do a Master\u2019s in Public Policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCarleton gave me that break,\u201d she recalled in an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cThey gave me a degree, professional contacts and confidence, which is no small thing. They really supported me as a young woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Carleton also introduced her to the public service. She was recommended for a term position at the Public Service Commission by one of her professors. She embarked on a career that included work in six departments on policy topics ranging from agriculture and food to transport and infrastructure, environment and climate change, and social policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon her retirement in 2018, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted: \u201cFor nearly 30 years, Yaprak Baltacio\u011flu served Canadians with skill, dedication and pride. The Treasury Board, our public service\u2014and our country\u2014will miss your outstanding leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Past Chancellors at Carleton include former prime minister Lester B. Pearson, entrepreneur Charles Chi, former deputy prime minister Herb Gray, federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau and Ramon (Ray) Hnatyshyn, former governor general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
