After achieving the highest growth in research income among comprehensive universities in <a href=\"https:\/\/researchinfosource.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Re$earch Infosource<\/a>\u2019s Top 50 Research Rankings last year, Carleton has again placed in the Top 3 in Canada as funds grew by 17 per cent. Experimental physicist <a href=\"https:\/\/physics.carleton.ca\/people\/faculty-members\/manuella-vincter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manuella Vincter<\/a> was named to a second term as deputy spokesperson for the ATLAS Experiment at CERN, the European organization for nuclear research. And three Carleton scholars were among the most cited in the world. <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/steven-j-cooke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steven Cooke<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/lenore-fahrig\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lenore Fahrig<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csit.carleton.ca\/~fyu\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">F. Reza Kholghy was awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/story\/new-canada-research-chair-uses-combustion-to-produce-nanoparticles-for-use-in-wide-range-of-next-generation-technologies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada Research Chair in Particle Technology and Combustion Engineering<\/a>, and is using nanoparticle combustion to develop energy storage solutions that could make renewable energy more efficient and help reduce soot emissions that are a major contributor to climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/siphotonics.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winnie Ye\u2019s<\/a> research also has applications for renewable energy. Todd was one of two scholars <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/2020\/two-carleton-university-researchers-named-to-the-rsc-college-of-new-scholars-artists-and-scientists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">named to the Royal Society of Canada\u2019s incoming class of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists<\/a>. She shared the distinction with <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/history\/people\/laura-madokoro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laura Madokoro<\/a>, who studies the history of sanctuary in Canada from the 17th century to the present, with a focus on post-Confederation sanctuary practices among religious and secular communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Science policy researchers at Carleton also earned accolades in 2020. The Canadian Science Policy Centre (CSPC) awarded its Exceptional Contributions Science Lifetime Achievement Award to <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sppa\/people\/slater-robert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Slater<\/a> for his input and expertise in policy-making, community building, innovation and capacity building. In 2020, the university <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/education\/university-rankings\/canadas-best-comprehensive-universities-rankings-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">maintained its Top 5 ranking in the Maclean\u2019s annual ranking of universities<\/a>. Wainer is building on this by <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/story\/modelling-the-spread-of-the-virus-in-indoor-environments-helps-pinpoint-transmission-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">working with Canada\u2019s Department of National Defense to model whether a virus hotspot could move through a building and put its occupants at risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the pandemic hit, Carleton launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/coris\/cu-covid-19-rapid-research-response-grants-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rapid Response Research Grant<\/a> program. The unprecedented program awarded grants to dozens of projects and COVID-19 research funding is already yielded promising results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/ashkan-golshani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ashkan Golshani<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scs\/people\/frank-dehne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank Dehne<\/a> built on more than 15 years of analysis of protein interactions at the Institute of Data Science, and used <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/ai-covid-peptide-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AI and Canada\u2019s largest supercomputer to identify a potential protein-based treatment for COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/cee\/people\/gunay-h-burak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Burak Gunay<\/a> has studied <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/story\/occupancy-based-ventilation-could-help-reduce-airborne-transmission-of-covid-19-in-indoor-environments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ways to use commercial buildings\u2019 heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) systems to reduce transmission risk in indoor environments<\/a>. And <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/alex-wong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Wong<\/a> is developing a <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/story\/decontaminating-n95-masks-could-help-address-personal-protective-equipment-shortages-during-the-second-wave-of-the-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">portable ultraviolet decontamination unit for personal protective equipment (PPE) that will enable N95 masks to be re-used<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Carleton\u2019s research income has grown to more than $81 million, an increase of more than 50 per cent over the last two years.
