2020, an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/id\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Industrial Design<\/a>&nbsp;student team won the national Automotive Parts Manufacturers\u2019 Association (APMA)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/projectarrow.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Project Arrow<\/a>&nbsp;competition, designing a zero-emission concept car using tools such as virtual reality and online communication platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Carleton team of third- and fourth-year students did the work in their spare time while continuing to complete courses and work on internships\u2014all while the world was coping with quarantines related to the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The design brief of the APMA competition called for a car that could be used in href=\"http:\/\/greenmetric.ui.ac.id\/overall-rankings-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton ranked number one in Ontario and second in Canada in the worldwide rankings, which assessed nearly 1,000 universities. Globally, Carleton ranked an impressive 57<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"160\" height=\"118\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ui-green-metric-160w-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72761\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The GreenMetric rankings assess each university\u2019s setting and infrastructure, energy and impact on climate change, waste, water, transportation, education and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 2020, the university released its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sustainability-Plan-2020-25-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Strive for Sustainability<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;strategic plan. It takes note of Carleton\u2019s $70 million in research funding for sustainability from external sources, the university\u2019s 35-per-cent reduction in carbon emissions intensity since 2005, and rankings<\/a>&nbsp;published in&nbsp;<em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>&nbsp;magazine on Oct. 8, 2020 confirm Carleton University\u2019s significant momentum in the post-secondary sector, particularly in the areas of research, student satisfaction and student awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among 15 comprehensive universities in Canada \u2014 those with a significant amount of research activity and a wide range of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including professional degrees \u2014 Carleton maintained its Top 5 overall ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an entry high school grade average that hit a new high of 84.1 per cent, Carleton students reported they were generally very pleased with their Carleton experience, leading to a Top 3 student satisfaction ranking in the comprehensive
