Costa was given the names of two Toronto women who died from COVID-19 \u2014 mother and daughter Doris and Dianne Chin. It began in spring 2020, when <em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em> reached out to journalism schools for assistance. Brett Popplewell, a Carleton journalism professor and the head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/journalism\/about\/fji\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Future of Journalism Initiative<\/a>, a collaborative research hub, helped spearhead the partnership. Popplewell recognized the need to properly mark the loss of thousands of Canadians to COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis is the last chance to give someone life, to capture the lives that have been lost at a time when people cannot mourn their loved ones as they normally would,\u201d says Popplewell.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a nobility to this kind of journalism. We are asking: \u2018Who were these people? What were their passions? Doris Chin was 89 when she died on April 13, 2020. She had immigrated from Jamaica in the late 1970s with her husband and 10 children and opened a family bakery that is still running today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her daughter Dianne\u2014Natasha\u2019s mother\u2014had died three days earlier at the age of 59. She was an elementary school teacher who also worked at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. The \u201cThey Were Loved\u201d project intends to commemorate as many of them as possible. But the organizers face a monumental challenge: there is no single record of every Canadian who has died from COVID-19. Identifying those people is the responsibility of Katherine Laidlaw, the journalist-in-residence at Carleton\u2019s Future of Journalism Initiative and the project\u2019s co-ordinating editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI scour obituaries, contact lawyers in class-action lawsuits, and reach out to health-care workers associations,\u201d explains Laidlaw, whose database has more than 1,100 names. \u201cI don\u2019t know if we will ever truly know every person who died from COVID, but we are doing our level best to find them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull wp-image-72875 size-full w-screen ml-offset-center cu-max-w-child-max px-4 md:px-6 lg:px-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/obituary-new-1200w-3.jpg\" alt=\"Frank Peres\" class=\"wp-image-72875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/obituary-new-1200w-3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/obituary-new-1200w-3-400x170.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/obituary-new-1200w-3-300x127.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/obituary-new-1200w-3-768x326.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/obituary-new-1200w-3-700x297.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/obituary-new-1200w-3-200x85.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>In addition to building the database, Laidlaw shares names and personal information with journalism educators around the country and then edits the pieces returned to her before passing them on to <em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>. While it is a herculean task, Laidlaw has found the collaboration with students has been one of the most rewarding aspects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have been so utterly impressed with the quality of reporting and writing that students have produced. It has exceeded my expectations,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI am brought to tears every couple of days because they really capture these people so beautifully. I feel that I\u2019ve come to know these people, which is a testament to the work and care of the students.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>She acknowledges that reporting from a place of empathy is not always easy for journalism students who have been trained to be hard-nosed. Josie Costigan says she learned that obituaries require a gentler touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a whole different type of writing. At first, she wasn\u2019t sure how to approach their granddaughter, Kailey.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI decided to just ask: \u2018What are you eager to tell me?\u2019 and we went from there,\u201d explains Costigan.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was so rewarding that it made me reconsider journalism and what I want to do with my writing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a journalism educator, Popplewell says the project has offered an opportunity to run his classroom like a newsroom in which everyone is collaborating on a common goal.
