increased social isolation, getting a touchable, tangible card or letter delivered to your door can spark a sense of connection and joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last spring, Carleton University student Marissa Parker saw handwritten cards as a way to help reduce feelings of loneliness among seniors living in care facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In August, the fifth-year <a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/programs\/bachelor-international-business\/?gclid=CjwKCAiAu8SABhAxEiwAsodSZPTU9bX-XaD6ePxh90K36z5RE92jvcA6WXh13SuFhU8dzBjqtwac4RoCrd0QAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bachelor of International Business<\/a> student launched a non-profit,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sendingsunshine.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sending Sunshine<\/a>, that collects cards from people around the world and distributes them to Canadian care facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full class=\"wp-element-caption\">Marissa Parker<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sendingsunshine.ca\/meet-the-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parker and three friends<\/a> \u2014 Tracy Wu, Kaitlyn Liang and Emily Crowe \u2014 have sent more than 22,000 cards to more than 80 retirement and care homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All cards are mailed to Sending Sunshine\u2019s PO Box in Mississauga, Ont. Parker and her colleagues review each card to make sure it meets safety protocols, then they divvy them up and personally deliver batches to nearby residences. Now that the non-profit\u2019s reach has expanded beyond the Greater Toronto Area and outside Ontario, they\u2019ve started sending boxes of cards to out-of-province locations.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cDelivering so many cards to facilities across Canada has been very rewarding,\u201d says Parker, whose website provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sendingsunshine.ca\/card-writing-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tips<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sendingsunshine.ca\/card-guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">guidelines<\/a> for volunteer contributors, such as writing an uplifting message in large print and avoiding subjects such as religion.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter receiving the cards, people often tell us how appreciated they were, especially during these unprecedented times. Getting mail from home helped her feel connected despite the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"301\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/brightening-care-facilities-with-cards-225w-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-73616\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/brightening-care-facilities-with-cards-225w-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/brightening-care-facilities-with-cards-225w-1-200x268.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing from this, Parker, whose summer job had been cancelled, began the ideation phase of Sending Sunshine in May 2020. Her strong organizational skills gave her the confidence to believe that she could bridge the gaps between card senders and care facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsure how to spend her time, but wanting to keep busy and support her local community, she began the process of organizing and registering the non-profit\u2014a complex step that four years at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sprott School of Business<\/a> prepared her to take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October, Parker and her collaborators saw another opportunity, this time to support students who have fewer places to volunteer during the pandemic. In January, it sent its first cards to Western Canada, and it\u2019s aiming to partner with care facilities in every province by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because volunteers often ask to learn more about the recipients of their cards, Sending Sunshine is also launching a pen pal program this month. It will match volunteers with seniors in care facilities so they can correspond and develop personal connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A placement student from Seneca College\u2019s gerontology program, Shaye Lamothe, is helping facilitate this program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there is hope that Canadians will be able to return to in-person socialization not too far down the road, Sending Sunshine is committed to brightening care facilities long after COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/our-stories\/\">More Stories<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s something magical about mail.
