illustrious Canadians, including retired general Rom\u00e9o Dallaire, author and advocate Margaret Trudeau, former Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson and Olympic figure skater Elizabeth Manley, when he receives a Transformational Leader award at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theroyal.ca\/get-involved\/about-foundation\/our-purpose\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Ottawa Foundation<\/a> for Mental Health\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theroyal.ca\/get-involved\/fundraising-events\/inspiration-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2021 Inspiration Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bacon has been a champion for mental health, sharing his own story about depression and substance use to inspire others and lead the Carleton University community in a is our shared responsibility to break that stigma.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Today, Carleton faculty, students and staff talk more openly about mental wellness, and an extensive array of resources, services and learning opportunities have been developed to help them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One important moment in this evolution toward a campus-wide focus on wellness came just over two years ago \u2014 on Jan. 29, 2019 \u2014 when Bacon spoke honesty about his journey through childhood trauma and mental health issues at a campus Let\u2019s Talk event attended by more than 300 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNobody should have to walk alone on their journey toward healing,\u201d says Bacon, who will be joined on the Inspiration Awards virtual podium by Carleton Sociology master\u2019s student <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/communityengagement\/people\/charlotte-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlotte Smith<\/a>, winner of the Royal\u2019s Personal Leader award for <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/story\/chemistry-opioids-perception\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overcoming homelessness and addiction<\/a> and helping others through her <a href=\"https:\/\/gradstudents.carleton.ca\/2018\/grad-research-homeless-and-at-risk-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedwayeo.ca\/get-involved\/community-builder-awards\/community-builders-of-the-year-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">volunteer<\/a> id=\"focusing-on-root-causes\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Focusing on Root Causes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to examine the root causes of mental illness, not just the symptoms, and it\u2019s important for Carleton not to try to hold onto the way we have always done things, but to adapt, to be flexible and to be compassionate in how we support our faculty, staff and students who are going through difficult circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bacon set the tone for this shift at Carleton when he was formally installed as president during a Convocation ceremony in November 2018, when he told the audience about his life\u2019s journey, which started in a dysfunctional family with a father who was fighting his own demons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure come to think it\u2019s your fault,\u201d he said in his speech.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s where the shame comes in, and the warped self-view, where you think you deserve contempt and pain, but certainly not joy or love. When you come out of that sort of place, you don\u2019t come out shining. I figure I was in and out of depression \u2014&nbsp;mostly in \u2014&nbsp;for about 20 years. Twenty years is a long time to live like that. Lots of alcohol and drugs. That\u2019s self-medication. People say alcohol and drugs are a problem. For the people who use them, it\u2019s often an attempted solution to the problem of living with trauma. I\u2019ve only recently started to talk about this&#8230; It\u2019s not easy, because there\u2019s a lot of tacit pressure not to talk about things like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTalking openly and honesty about mental health issues, their symptoms and their causes, is the first step toward addressing them, both as an individual and as a society. I\u2019ve been on the path of recovery for 10 years now, and I\u2019m learning to love life again, to love myself again, and it\u2019s been amazing. Bacon\u2019s keynote address at the summit was entitled \u201cMy ongoing journey towards resilience, purpose and gratitude.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/studentsupport\/wp-content\/uploads\/Student-Mental-Health-Framework-2.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/mental-health-300w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Student Mental Health Framework 2.0\" class=\"wp-image-73983\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/mental-health-300w-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/mental-health-300w-1-200x153.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton received these distinctions from Excellence Canada \u2014&nbsp;a not-for-profit dedicated to advancing organizational performance across the country \u2014&nbsp;thanks to several ongoing efforts, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/studentsupport\/wp-content\/uploads\/Student-Mental-Health-Framework-2.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Student Mental Health Framework 2.0<\/a>, a robust <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.carleton.ca\/healthy-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Healthy Workplace<\/a> program and the university\u2019s holistic approach to supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/healthy-workplace\/mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">workplace mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These priorities gained new emphasis during the COVID-19 pandemic, with mental wellness being challenged in many ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Feb. 1, Carleton was for the seventh straight year named one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/reviews.canadastop100.com\/top-employer-carleton-university?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Capital Region\u2019s top employers<\/a>, in large part for supporting the health of the university community, including a network of more than 85 Healthy Workplace champions who act as departmental ambassadors, and flexible work options to help people balance personal and family commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/president\/strategic-integrated-plan-sip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"367\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sip-cover-300w-1.jpg\" alt=\"SIP Cover\" class=\"wp-image-73986\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/sip-cover-300w-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/sip-cover-300w-1-200x245.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Carleton\u2019s pandemic response \u2014&nbsp;frequent communications from Bacon to the campus community, a dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/covid19\/?utm_source=Homepage&amp;utm_medium=Alert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19 website<\/a> with all of the university\u2019s communications, and an emergency fund to help students with their immediate needs \u2014&nbsp;was also praised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Underlying this culture of and commitment to wellness is the university\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/president\/strategic-integrated-plan-sip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Strategic Integrated Plan<\/a> (SIP) launched last September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the SIP\u2019s three strategic directions is \u201cstrive for wellness, strive for sustainability,\u201d calling for pathways that \u201cbuild and promote programming, infrastructure projects and spaces that embrace a commitment to social, physical, cultural and environmental wellness\u201d and \u201cincrease openness, knowledge and capacity across campus to proactively support and empower the mental health, resilience and well-being of our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Speaking Out about Mental Health: Benoit-Antoine Bacon @ Carleton\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fgQaGsS2aSo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
