href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/socanth\/sociology-program\/graduate-sociology-programs\/\">Sociology<\/a>, has faced overwhelming challenges throughout her life: childhood sexual abuse, homelessness, incarceration, drug dependency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Undaunted, she has channelled these experiences into her academic, advocacy and activist work, developing research projects to address youth homelessness, creating a bursary to help homeless youth attend Carleton, and delivering food, phones and other essential items to homeless and precariously housed youth who are struggling during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-74007\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" class=\"wp-element-caption\">Charlotte Smith<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For these actions, and for <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/story\/chemistry-opioids-perception\/\">sharing her story of recovery<\/a> to help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illness, Smith will be awarded the Personal Leader for Mental Health award at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theroyal.ca\/get-involved\/about-foundation\/our-purpose\">Royal Ottawa Foundation<\/a> for Mental Health\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theroyal.ca\/get-involved\/fundraising-events\/inspiration-awards\">2021 Inspiration Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt can be re-traumatizing, embarrassing and awkward talking so publicly about your mental health and substance use issues, so it\u2019s comforting when someone tells you that you\u2019re not just oversharing, you\u2019re actually making a small difference in other people\u2019s lives,\u201d says Smith, who will be joined on the Inspiration Awards virtual podium by Carleton President Benoit-Antoine Bacon, winner of the Royal\u2019s Transformational Leader award.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cGetting an award like this is fantastic, but there are <em>so<\/em> many people doing so much important work on mental health and substance use,\u201d says Smith, who last year won a <a href=\"https:\/\/apt613.ca\/community-builder-awards-meet-five-outstanding-locals-who-are-volunteering-to-help-others-through-covid-19\/\">Community Builder Award from the United Way East Ontario<\/a> for her volunteer efforts in COVID times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe the same areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMore than anything, winning this award is a testament to my support network. I\u2019m like rusty car that breaks down often: without endless help and encouragement from my friends, supporters and allies I\u2019d still be in the ditch. Just because I talk about mental health and substance use doesn\u2019t mean that I no longer struggle with these issues, but it does mean I\u2019m being held up by a lot of people who aren\u2019t getting awards for the work they\u2019re doing. People who are addicted to drugs or alcohol almost always face \u201ca constellation of issues,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cPeople who use drugs don\u2019t just need clean needles, but access to housing and mental health support. But universities aren\u2019t the sort of place you walk into and feel instantly at home as someone struggling with mental health and substance use. A huge part of my success and why I am being recognized is that people seem to think I stand out. They think people who use drugs and who have mental health issues aren\u2019t capable, willing or deserving of post-secondary education. This has to change, and I think it slowly is. President Bacon is a symbol of this change, however we need to accelerate this change because opportunities and lives are being lost every day that we don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe like to think that mental health and substance issues are happening somewhere else, to someone else, but they\u2019re all around us, all the time. I just can\u2019t stop trying to help, even if no one is listening and even if the change at the end of the line is a small one.
