She spoke online Thursday, March 18, 2021 at Carleton University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.carleton.ca\/events\/discovery-lecture\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Discovery Lecture<\/a>, hosted annually by the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.carleton.ca\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Science<\/a> and the School of Journalism and Communication to showcase excellence in science journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-74870\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/maydianne-andrade-1200w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Prof. Maydianne CB Andrade\" class=\"wp-image-74870\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/maydianne-andrade-1200w-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/maydianne-andrade-1200w-1-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/maydianne-andrade-1200w-1-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/maydianne-andrade-1200w-1-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/maydianne-andrade-1200w-1-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/maydianne-andrade-1200w-1-700x397.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/maydianne-andrade-1200w-1-200x113.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Prof. Maydianne CB Andrade (Photo: Nick Iwanyshyn)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/profile\/everts-sarah\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Everts<\/a>, Carleton&#8217;s CTV Chair in Digital Science Journalism, described Andrade as &#8220;an extraordinary science communicator&#8221; with notable appearances, including CBC Radio&#8217;s Quirks and Quarks, Andrade&#8217;s podcast The New Normal and a guest spot on CBC Television&#8217;s The Nature of Things, where Andrade dug up ancient fossils on camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrade focused part of her talk on black widow spiders and their ventures into what she described as &#8220;sexual cannibalism.&#8221; While the practice of female spiders passing on their genes \u2013 then eating their male partners \u2013 may sound strange at first, Andrade said that evolution &#8220;is not about self-interest&#8221; \u2013 it&#8217;s about individuals engaging in practices that pass their traits to the next generation.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;They are beautiful, in that we can use them to probe our understanding of how behaviour, mating and flexible development allow adaptation to varying environmental contexts,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Andrade, like many scientists, continues reading and learning about diverse fields such as the Burgess Shale \u2013 a fossil-bearing geological formation in the Canadian Rockies \u2013 or immunology, the latter of which has proven useful during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She sees herself as a &#8220;knowledge translator&#8221; of these complex topics to help people understand rather than trying to be an expert in everything \u2013 and she said it&#8217;s important for scientists to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re seeing on a large scale, the results of a lack of confidence in science and scientists,&#8221; Andrade said, &#8220;and part of that is as clearly misinformation, right? (Photo: Andy Gregg)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrade&#8217;s Black community advocacy began in 2013 when a neighbour asked her to give a presentation for Black History Month at her school \u2013 &#8220;something that is not just about the Underground Railroad,&#8221; were her instructions.
