The value of helping others and giving back is a sentiment that runs deep for Nguyen, earning him this year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sce.carleton.ca\/faculty\/chan\/index.php?page=award\">Adrian D. C. Chan Award for Volunteer and Community Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 2012 by <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sce\/people\/chan\/\">Adrian Chan<\/a>, a longtime professor in Carleton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sce\/\">Department of Systems and Computer Engineering<\/a>, the award seeks to recognize student\u2019s voluntary involvement and community engagement at Carleton and in the broader community. Nguyen is drawn toward volunteering in the health-care, emergency management and disaster relief sectors, focusing his current efforts on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sja.ca\/English\/Pages\/default.aspx\">St. John Ambulance<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.ca\/\">Canadian Red Cross<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe amount of things that (Nguyen) does, the level of commitment that he has shown and the consistency across many years is just outstanding,\u201d says Chan. \u201cThrough COVID-19, not only did (Nguyen) continue to volunteer but even stepped up his contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nguyen first got involved with St. John Ambulance, an organization that teaches and provides first aid and emergency medical services, all the way back in 2015. In that role, Nguyen works with families in the aftermath of a traumatic event such as a house fire, helping them secure food, shelter, clothing and transportation, while also providing referrals to other community resources and counselling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been with these organizations long enough that my goal now is to teach others and get others involved with volunteering,\u201d says Nguyen.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI want to push it forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In the past, Nguyen has volunteered with patients at the Ottawa Hospital and as a classroom demonstrator with Let\u2019s Talk Science, a Canadian charity focused on engaging children and youth with science, technology, engineering and math-based programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt gives me such joy just reading the applications, to hear about all these students\u2019 efforts,\u201d says Chan, noting that it\u2019s notoriously difficult to choose a winner of the award each year because of the large number of dedicated applicants. \u201cI think it&#8217;s important to also recognize that there are many other students like Trong out there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nguyen isn\u2019t sure exactly where he\u2019ll end up once he wraps up his third degree at Carleton, but he knows he wants to continue prioritizing volunteering and engaging with local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important not just to be a good academic, but also a well-rounded person,\u201d says Nguyen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou want to take what you learn and apply it to the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/our-stories\/\">More Stories<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cVolunteering, at the end of the day, means putting your efforts into something greater than yourself\u2014it\u2019s a calling,\u201d says Trong Nguyen, a student in Carleton University\u2019s Faculty of Engineering and Design.
