Unbeknownst to Lacks or her family, cells retrieved during a biopsy were sent to a tissue lab, where researchers made a remarkable discovery: unlike similar cell samples, which died quickly, Henrietta\u2019s cells doubled every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past seven decades, these so called \u201cHeLa cells\u201d have continued to multiply. They have received no compensation for the millions of dollars the cells have generated or the approximately 17,000 resulting patents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full wp-image-76036\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/oreoluwa-idowu-225w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Oreoluwa Idowu\" class=\"wp-image-76036\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/oreoluwa-idowu-225w-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/oreoluwa-idowu-225w-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/oreoluwa-idowu-225w-1-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Oreoluwa Idowu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>HeLa cells have also been used in a pair of upper-year cell biology courses at Carleton University for the past 10 years, which is one of the reasons why Nadeea Rahim, a fourth-year Biology and Human Rights student, launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/carletonhela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carleton HeLa initiative<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the support of the Lacks family, it aims to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/carleton-university-demand-carleton-university-recognize-henrietta-lacks-for-bipoc-scientific-contribution?recruiter=1164489803&amp;recruited_by_id=d3ee3f90-2777-11eb-821b-f70aaf3f80a3&amp;utm_source=share_petition&amp;utm_medium=copylink&amp;utm_campaign=petition_dashboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raise awareness<\/a> about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kroegerpolicyreview.com\/post\/a-black-woman-s-body-has-saved-millions-of-lives-but-you-ve-probably-never-heard-her-name\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contribution Henrietta Lacks has made to modern science<\/a> by renaming the biology lab where HeLa cells are used in her honour, sharing her story on a plaque outside the lab, and establishing a <a href=\"https:\/\/futurefunder.carleton.ca\/giving-fund\/henrietta-lacks-scholarship-in-biology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bursary for undergraduate Biology students<\/a> at the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All three of these plans were approved by Carleton\u2019s Board of Governors at its meeting on April 29, 2021.
