The graduate student award is $15,000 and each undergraduate was awarded $10,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The awards align with the strategic directions of Carleton\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/sip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Strategic Integrated Plan<\/a>&nbsp;and respond to a specific recommendation in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/edi-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carleton\u2019s new EDI Action Plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 43 applicants, here are the six winners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"sami-islam\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sami Islam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sami Islam is a third-year Journalism and Law student who will research how prosecutorial discretion is influenced by guidance from attorneys general using a multi-jurisdictional analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright wp-image-76403 size-thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sami-Islam-300x450.jpg\" alt=\"Sami Islam in front of MacOdrum Library\" class=\"wp-image-76403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Sami-Islam-300x450.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Sami-Islam-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Sami-Islam-1400x2100.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Sami-Islam-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Sami-Islam-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Sami-Islam-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Sami-Islam-700x1050.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Sami-Islam-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/Sami-Islam-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sami Islam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Prosecutors are given the discretion to make decisions based on their own assessment of a situation,&#8221; says Islam. &#8220;This individual discretion is a very important part of the job. It is also what sometimes causes the great variance we see in responses to two people who have committed very similar offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy hope is that by understanding how individual prosecutors respond to attorneys general, I can contribute to a reimagining of justice systems which sees prosecutorial discretion being used as a tool to work against mass incarceration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Islam looks forward to the impact the award could have on his future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope that the work I&#8217;m doing will inform my career goals and what I hope to see in the legal field in years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"khaled-madhoun\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Khaled Madhoun<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Khaled Madhoun is graduating in June with an Engineering Physics degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He plans to catalogue case studies of bad design in technology, locally and around the world, which demonstrate design biases and propose methodologies that can help reduce them. He hopes to disseminate the findings from this analysis as \u2018best design practices\u2019 for use at Carleton and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, there are still many exclusionary designs in technology today. Devices that cannot be used by people with certain disabilities, function variably depending on skin colour, sex, etc. I plan to catalogue many of these case studies and create a best practices protocol to be potentially used by the Faculty of Engineering and Design and other engineers\/designers,\u201d says Madhoun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exclusionary designs include the first Apple watches which had issues with properly measuring heart rates for people with darker skin, he says. The main spaces analyzed will include the self, the home, the church, social media and the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince formal public channels of expression are often denied to Black women generally and African women specifically, many immigrants struggle to express their everyday lived experience of diversity in terms of the official rhetoric of multiculturalism and racism,\u201d says Chimhanda. \u201cIt is my hope that this project begins to demarginalize African women in discussions about multiculturalism by emphasizing their cultural and racial identity as displayed&nbsp;through everyday beauty practices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"alexis-white\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alexis White<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexis White, a second-year Sociology student, is grateful to have a research opportunity as an undergraduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She will look at the history of racialized student activism on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cProtests and discussion of racism, diversity and persecution have only now become more common in mainstream media as of late, but racialized student groups have continuously led these discussions for social change for much longer,\u201d says White.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope my research will give a platform to racialized student activists at Carleton, as well as explore the intricate reality and history of institutionalised racism that they are working to uproot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"samira-amid\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Samira Amid<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Samira Amid is a fourth-year student pursuing an honours BA majoring in Law and Human Rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have been working towards my undergraduate degree full time, year-round and under course overload to quicken my graduation process,\u201d says Amid. \u201cThis is amazing news for my family and I.
