member<\/a> in Carleton University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/communication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication and Media Studies<\/a> program, was drawn to Canada from Virginia\u2019s University of Richmond for a few reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For starters, the professorship, which is rooted in the intersection between digital media and racism, is right up his alley as a media theorist and Black Studies scholar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-76523\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" collaborators\u2014research relationships that were cemented when Towns attended a conference at Carleton in January 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But underlying these connections is Towns\u2019 foundational focus on the communications theories of Marshall McLuhan, the Canadian philosopher (and academic descendant of Harold Innis) who became famous around the world in the 1960s for his ideas about the impact of mass media on thought and behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThere weren\u2019t really any other McLuhan or Innis scholars in Richmond,\u201d says Towns, who begins his new position on July 1, 2021.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy research touches on aspects of race and digital media in ways that aren\u2019t always addressed, and conversations with people at Carleton could Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although McLuhan is best known for coining the phrase \u201cthe medium is the message\u201d and the term \u201cglobal village,\u201d which embody theories about technology and interconnectedness informed by the proliferation of television in the 1960s, Towns agrees with the argument that McLuhan was ahead of his time\u2014that his concepts presage the omnipresence of the Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full wp-image-76531\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"275\" class=\"wp-element-caption\">Marshall McLuhan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But he\u2019s fascinated by the era in which these ideas emerged, even if McLuhan and other mid-century media scholars primarily considered and wrote from a white point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really interested in the historical moment that McLuhan began theorizing in,\u201d says Towns. \u201cA lot of people study McLuhan without thinking about that context. My next book will delve into what was happening in the 1950s and 1960s: the Cold War, the Black Power movement in Canada and the United States, decolonialization in Africa and Asia. Amid all this, McLuhan\u2019s discussion of what it means to be human really centred on a white perspective, at a time when much of the world was saying that perspective didn\u2019t speak for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love McLuhan and think his work is fascinating,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEven though McLuhan was wrong in some ways, we can\u2019t just discard him. I want to apply him in different contexts and build on his ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Towns\u2019 first book, <em>On Black Media Philosophy<\/em>, which the University of California Press will be publish in spring 2022, examines everything from Darwin\u2019s archives to YouTube videos to argue that the Black body acts as a technological extension of Western constructs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one of the chapters, he examines the 2014 killing of Michael Brown by police in Ferguson, Missouri. All are open to be used in a variety of ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a utopian space of freedom, equality and democratic discourse,\u201d he says about the Internet. \u201cIt\u2019s being mobilized in harmful ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sip\/wp-content\/uploads\/Carleton-University-Strategic-Integrated-Plan-2020-2025.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"275\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sip-225w-1.jpg\" alt=\"Strategic Integrated Plan\" class=\"wp-image-74686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/sip-225w-1.jpg 225w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/162\/sip-225w-1-200x244.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Strategic Integrated Plan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Towns believes there\u2019s a need for more government regulation online and that the monolithic corporations behind most digital content should be paying much higher taxes\u2014ideas that resonate more in Canada than the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to bringing his research and teaching to Carleton, Towns will contribute to a wider effort\u2014enshrined in the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sip\/wp-content\/uploads\/Carleton-University-Strategic-Integrated-Plan-2020-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Strategic Integrated Plan<\/a>\u2014to \u201cadvance both scholarly and public conversations about the difficult and complicated histories of racism and its myriad entanglements in our media systems,\u201d says Greenberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of my work has always been concerned with how we can create institutions that are open to seeing different perspectives on an issue,\u201d says Towns. \u201cLet\u2019s build a more holistic understanding of what knowledge is, incorporating various perspectives and cultures and a broader understanding of what it means to be human.
